Powered F/W Hub Tech question

I am embarking on an experiment to get a F/W signal from my HVX202 to both a Firestore and DVRack (Laptop) simultaneously.

I have bought an IOGear 3 port F/W hub. It has 3x 6 pin F/W ports plus it has facility to be powered (9v 11mw)

Connecting his hub to my desk top (6 pin to 6 pin) lights up the hub LED showing power is being supplied (cool...I understand that)

Connecting the hub to the Firestore (6 pin to 6 pin) no power to the hub. (Dont understand that)

Connecting the hub to the HVX or the laptop (4 pin to 6 pin) no power supply and I understand that . There is also no signal through this so I am going to provide the hub with power via a small 9v Battery.

Before doing so - WHAT MIGHT THIS DAMAGE if I've got the theory wrong that I need to power this hub to get a signal through it (to both devices) ?

I wouldn't expect the FS-100 to supply bus power, even though it has a 6-pin connector. I think Focus Enhancements selected the 6-pin connector because it is mechanically more robust than the tiny 4-pin connector.
