Power zoom is broken?

I'm sorry if this has been addressed before -- but I just got my camera back from a friend using it for a wedding and...

...when I press Telephoto or Wide, it's just making a whining machine noise but the zoom doesn't do anything.

I can't believe this. I am so angry. Is this fixable and how much will it cost?

It's on manual. There's a mechanical switch on the front of the camera which disengages the motor from the lens.
