Power Questions

Ok - so I had a pretty interesting experience today. Was shooting an interview and was using my fancy dancy new Switronix Jetpack X v-lock plate, which is really mostly of use to me as it's supposed to give you a 5 minute buffer when your battery is almost dead so that you can hot swap it, even with accessories plugged into the dtap ports and what not. It supposed to hold Phantoms and Alexas, which have a higher draw than the F35 I believe. (here's more info: http://www.switronix.com/products?page=shop.browse&category_id=51) I thought this plate would be awesome and so useful with the F35, even though its a bit bulky.

This was my first shoot with it. I noticed that my batteries were TANKING. Like going from full to dead in like 5 minutes. Was using some IDX on-brand ones as well as some ebay ones (that have been extremely reliable before and had great reviews from reduser and what not).

I eventually went through all my batteries as they were going so fast. I was very frustrated and luckily had my old sony v-lock plate with me so I decided to swap battery plates mid shoot as I've never had issues like this before with that plate. SO - i swapped and lo and behold, the batteries held their seemingly normal runtimes on the sony plate.

Has anyone else had odd issues like this? I should call them and ask, but figured I'd ask here too.

It also brought me to another question - what batteries have had the best performance for you on the F35. I keep on hearing the new sony olivine ones are pretty good? any other winners?

With the F65 I have recently switched the hawkwoods "Reel Power" system. They are 24v batteries, designed for Phantom and Alexa. However, they make an adapter plate for the F35/F65 which give you 12 and 24v from one v-lock RP battery. They are superb.

They also let you use a standard 24v film-style battery and give you 12 and 24v power through that. I love the system, it works superbly.

You sound like there's perhaps a bust capacitor or something in the jetpack, it seems like it is constantly drawing power rather than just "passing through" after it is full. If it is drawing too much voltage, that can zap a battery fast.
