power options

Has anyone managed to rig up a mains adaptor to another power source?

I would like to use my NP style batteries with my 5D.

They are 12V, so I would have to get some kind of adapter for voltage too I imagine?

Any ideas?

The 5D batteries are 7.4 volts as far as I know.

I'd be reluctant to futz around with it, but check "voltage divider" for clues.

I have a unit that converts from 12v to a number of other voltages, I have used it before to power 7.2 v items with no issues.....

I was thinking to plug the ac adapter for the 5D into the voltage adaptor...... cant think of any reason why it should fail but secretly hoping that someone with technical knowledge would be able to advise me if there could be any issues.

I don't get what you're saying. Do you have an AC power supply that outputs multiple DC voltages?

Do you have a voltage converter for 12 volts that can output 7.2 volts?

One thing I notice is the camera indicates it's 8.1 dc volts, but the battery indicates it's 7.2 dc volts...

Personally, I'm sure I see the point of the effort since the camera can't really draw all that much even in live view.

A resister might cause issues with current flow.

also just out of interest, would bad things happen if I plugged a 12V battery into the camera?

It says 8.1V on the bottom, so a 7.2V battery isnt quite right anyway....

The actual Canon LP-E6 batteries I have are 7.2 volts and the camera tag on the bottom indicates 8.1 volts. The voltage from the battery could be stepped up for the camera, so I'd guess that 7.2 volts is what the camera should be fed.

I doubt the camera would like being fed 12 volts and the warranty wouldn't make things better after that exercise.

Okay, I have ordered a dc/dc 12v to various voltages adaptor. I have also ordered a dc coupler, I am going to use my np1 batteries into the 12v adapter, and set it at 7.5V as that is the nearest voltage to 7.2 or 8.1 depending where you look at the camera.

Wish me luck.....and dont tell canon....

I will report back in due course
