GH4 POWER OIS jitter issue

One more unhappy from vimeo:

4 hours agoEric, thanks for sharing. The good news is that they're working on it, but the results aren't really improving anything up to this point. since you seem to be in contact with Panasonic, can you maybe hit them back with a couple of things? those being:
-OIS works terrible with 14-140mm & 35-100mm lenses, because of jittering

This issue cant be sample variation. One more to complain:

Hi, as for the 12-35 2.8 Panasonic lens I have tried it extensively and being the only alternative in that range, large aperture I guess it’s ok but I’m very disappointed with the stabilization. It does help a lot compared to a non stabilized lens but it does not “float” the picture like for instance a Canon stabilized lens. I get these bad micro vibrations in the picture when shooting handheld and have to use post production stabilization for all handheld clips."

Maybe I'm crazy, but it looks to me that firmware 2.0 not only helps with the autofocus in video with the 14-140 II, but it helps with the stability of the OIS as well.

I've haven't noticed this with my 14-140 (first version) except in certain slow panning situations where you might expect it. I'll take a look with mine. You're sure it's not tripod vibration?

I have the older 14-140, the inability to pan with OIS on is the biggest problem I have using the GH4. Never have this problem with the AC90 and rarely with my old HMC150. I Don't know why OIS can't work the same on the GH4

I tested carefully the FW 2.0 with 14-140 II jitter and I cant find a difference. The jitter is still there. Autofocus in 4k is much better than before. Bitrate is also more about 97Mbs (before 75-80Mbs).

14-140 and 12-35 are fine for me, but the 35-100 OIS is horrid!

I find the OIS acceptable on my first version Panasonic 14-140 and 12-35 lenses, but was so disappointed with the 35-100 lens I returned it for a refund.

Example video of the 35-100mm lens I purchased:

Every video example I have seen on the internet reveals this problem, and other owners have commented on this. Other examples:

I have exchanged emails with Panasonic and talked to their customer service department, but they can only suggest I send it in for repair. From all the examples of faulty 35-100 OIS I've seen, I suspect the 35-100 has a design flaw that can't be resolved with a repair. Its a pity, as I really want this focal length, but the OIS ruins it for hand held use.

I'm having a similar issue with my 12-35mm Panny lens on the GH4. Micro jitters all over when shooting handheld with the OIS, even at 12mm...Here's a short sample. Shot at 29.97 4k UHD, 1/60 shutter, ISO 200, aperture somewhere around the mid/high teens, maybe 16 or 18. (No ND filter) Cine-D, everything set to -5 except NR which was -2. -1/+1 for highlight shadow, no iDynamic or iResolution.

There's a lot of movement early on but once the subject settles and starts walking away you can see the sand on the beach bounce around like crazy. It seems like the issue only crops up on high detail areas. Sand, concrete, etc. I have some other shots where the background is less detailed and it doesn't seem to be much of an issue...and I have a few shots of a subject in front of a concrete ledge where the image as a whole is ok, but the ledge itself looks like it's bouncing around like the sand in this clip.

Anyway, I was doing some research on the topic, and found this thread...

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...-shakiness-possible-lemon-Any-others-see-this

Which recommends updating the firmware on the lens. I'm still running 1.0 on my 12-35mm, so I'm going to try the update this week and see if there's an improvement. Oddly enough, the above thread mentions the problem being prevalent on the GH3...I've been using my GH3 with the 12-35 for months with absolutely no complaints about the OIS. It's worked great. I always shot in ALL-I though...maybe that helped smoothed over the jitters?? Would that make sense?

In the meantime, what can I do to clean that image up? I tried PP's warp stabilizer, but I don't like the results I'm getting at all.

I'd like to add that my 35-100mm is also a complete disaster handheld. I only use it on a tripod, without OIS. I'm pretty sure that it's just a design flaw with that lens, like others have mentioned.

I'm having a similar issue with my 12-35mm Panny lens on the GH4. Micro jitters all over when shooting handheld with the OIS, even at 12mm...

I tested in my store a latest FW updated 12-35mm 2.8 lens (with GH4) and it jittered the same way as my 14-140mm II. I also tested it with GH3 and the jitter was the same. There is something wrong in POWER OIS. It is though very good when taking photos.

12-35 and 14-140 OIS work fine for me...not so with the 35-100 OIS

12-35 and 14-140 OIS work fine for me...not so with the 35-100 OIS

I have the 12-35mm and first generation 14-140mm lenses, and the OIS works very well with both my GH3 and GH4 cameras. I recommend applying firmware updates to lenses, as I've read this helped the 12-35mm's OIS. I bought my 12-35mm used with the update already applied, so I can't comment on OIS performance prior to the firmware update.

I wish Panasonic would acknowledge the problems with the 35-100mm OIS jitters and attempt to fix it. For a $1500 lens, it is unacceptable when their lesser expensive lenses' OIS perform so well. As they have been able to improve OIS with other lens firmware updates, it seems logical that they could do something to help the 35-100mm lens.

I got a micro HDMI-cable and I tested in real time in big screen my GH4 and 14-140 II / 14-42 lenses. 14-140 II POWER OIS floats stabilation very nice. When I pan slowly and stop motion the image moves little further and stops nicely. The video image floats and lags a bit behind hand movement. When I stop movement and try to keep it steady the OIS starts to jitter image like it is too willing to go to some direction. With 14-42mm image is very steady but the movement are not floating as nicely.

Is there anyone who has sent a POWER OIS lens to repair due to jittering. I would like to hear what Panasonic says about that issue. I contacted Panasonic Europe service from Finland and they said that they dont know the issue.

I'm considering the Olympus 40-150mm instead

I'm considering the Olympus 40-150mm instead

"We haven't heard of this issue" is a common excuse by many customer service departments. There seems to be enough talk about this issue that Panasonic should be aware of the issue by now. The cynic in me thinks Panasonic is ignoring the issue, but the optimist in me thinks that if enough people speak up Panasonic may fix it. They improved the OIS in the 12-35mm lens with a firmware update, so it is possible they could try to fix the 35-100mm lens. If they can't fix it, they should redesign a "Mark II" version of the lens. For $1500 USD, there's no excuse for bad OIS.

If the forthcoming Olympus 40-150mm lens erodes Panasonic's 35-100mm sales, maybe Panasonic will reconsider doing something about it. If I can't shoot handheld with the Pany 35-100mm, and have to shoot on sticks, the Oly 40-150mm looks like a better value (more reach, better build quality, built-in hood, same price).

I had finally today an opportunity to test another 14-140 mm II in a camera store. It behaved exactly the same as my copy. Noticeable micro vibration at 14mm. The salesman said he have talked with Panasonic import people in Finland and they confirmed that they know the issue and Panasonic is maybe working for FW fix. They said also it is a feature, not a fault. So we cant return our lenses or demand a fix.

At least I know I dont have a faulty lens and on the other hand I know everyone has badly working OIS. I hope that as many as possible could report to service and demand a fix.

I am still wondering why people are not complaining about this. How cant they see it or if they see it why dont they care?

I tested today the Pana 14-42 v2 with my GH4 and there was absolutely zero jitter handheld at 14mm other than natural hand movements.

My 12-35 definitely does not have jitter, but my 35-100's OIS is completely unusable for handheld video. I was extremely disappointed by the jittering.
