I put together a short for the Canadian Law Society's Roderick A. Macdonald competition. Sorry for the low quality...

And before you ask; yes, those are real homeless people, lol.

Wow. That was one of the best pieces I've seen on the site. Do you plan on making a full length documentary on poverty? If so, I'd definitely be interested in seeing it.

That was very well put together. Not sure about using clips from other movies though (Armageddon, Deep Impact, etc.) Credits are given on the website, but there really should be credits on the actual video. Overall it was a very powerful piece with some really nice shots. The text fx was really nice too. Powerful. Good job!

That was really amazing. More than just visually stunning, I think it did something that alot of pieces don't do, and that is open your eyes and make you think. To me, it was a very impactful piece, and really evokes alot of questions and emotions about the subject. Well done in all regards.

Im glad you guys enjoyed it. Originally i made it for a food drive hosted by my school. However, a competition arrose involving globalization so i re-edited it slightly (fixed the graphics, made it more global). That is why there are movie shots, i thought it would be ok for a school movie and i didnt have alot of time to go back to TO and shoot a new opening.

What did it win? it was a first place winner for the visual catagory.

Great job Rhydon. Give us a hint about your music and graphics. Really well done. Looks like some time and effort went into it... I see the music credits on the web, how about the graphics?

The music was from my personal collection of soundtracks. The song everyone seems to like is the piano/violin piece in the opening; Its called the Gravel Road, from the Village.
Graphics wise, i composited them all in After Effects. The Rhywag logo at the opening was done with trapcode's 3d stroke. The main text titles were done as follows: I started by taking pictures of various parts of newspapers with a digital camera. I then brought in the photos to AE and made columns out of the stitching... Because of the original image sizes being 6k, a lot of scaling was done. Also, I had to work in a 1080p workspace and use AE's region of interest tool to composite. This allowed me to see all of the motion of the columns before they went into frame. This was quite useful in the setup of the graphics, but considering the scaleing and mass size of the frame, rendering times were horrible. 3mins per frame....

That’s about it in terms of graphics. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Dude that was awesome!

I like the topic its based on..its a good concept to focus on..and its true...poverty has become a really big thing in the US and the world...

the editing was awesome..i like the movie logo animation with the lines was freaking awesome...i watched that like 5 times. lol...did you do those distortion effects in AE also?

it was really top grade stufff..good work!

Rhydon - "From my personal collection of soundtracks" doesn't mean you own the rights to it. :) "Just-for-fun" projects is fine and I doubt any company is going to sue a homeless awareness video, but you really should give credit where credit is due. I suggest you add credits to the end of the video for your use of copyrighted materials. It's the right thing to do and you don't want to get into bad habits this early in your very bright career/future. Good luck! You've got talent!

PK Gillock. I totally agree with you. However, please understand that i never really had an intention to submit this to a competition. This video was created for my highschool community food drive. It wasnt until my teacher told me that i could be elligable, AND the fact that the canadian law society said that it was OK to have copywrite material. I know it sounds a little odd about a law society authorizing such a thing. By the time i had finished the new graphics, and changed it to be more global, there was no time to put my own music in. It was such a tight deadline that as soon as i finished the video, the day it was due, i had to drive it 8 hours away to the law society in ottowa, making it there 1 hour before the deadline. I submited a sheet to the law society with all of the copywrite material used, as well as a documented EDL of where it was used in the project. At the time i gave all the credit i could. Again, i only submitted this "personal" project to the competition because i could. Not becasue i thought i might be able to get away with it.

Rhydon - That makes more sense now. ...Since it's a really good video, as is, I would just take your version and add a page or two of credits at the end. Then you can distribute it on the web as much as you want, use it in your portfolio, etc. And nobody is none the wiser and jerks like me will shut-up! :) If not, no biggie. It's for a good cause so you have a license to kill :)

A while back I remember some guys who used a popular band's song in their short film (showing it everywhere on the web). At the end they gave credit to everyone and their dog but didn't mention the copyrighted material. Not cool.

But you're cool. And I wish you luck on future projects.

Hey man that was put together really well. Your edits are tight, the piece flows, has symmetry, and is engaging.

My only suggestion would have been to add what frequently is referred to in problem-solving situations as the "so what". By asking yourself or others "so what" after introducing a problem or situation that needs to be resolved - you can see whether you have communicated a solution.

I would liked to have seen something at the end that offers a a solution or action step. For example -- "Call 123-4567 to get information on how YOU can help end poverty" or, "Remember to vote for John Smith who vows to end poverty" ... something along those lines.

But, again ... the piece was well done.
