FS7: Post workflow

We mainly deliver in 8bit 709 which has 256 tonal levels or 16 million possible colours

XAVC 10bit has 1064 tonal levels (1.07billion colours!) - four times more than 'needed' - this translates to a file that is very flexible in post.

Raw is 12 bits which is 4096 levels of tone - twenty times more than 'needed'

So yes XAVC is a bit like shooting a jpg - but more like shooting some sort of 'raw light' - imagine your exposure slider in Lightroom only went up or down half a stop.

Raw is like shooting a raw still and very flexible indeed.

Well raw is raw if done as pure raw and processed is not raw. The point of doing raw? To get unaltered data for total adjustment in post. Point of doing LOG? To squeeze the maximum dynamic range out of the sensor for total adjustment in post.

I think with good intention one could recognise that my curiosity was aimed at the comparable codecs of each flavour, ie. 10bit 422 vs 10bit 422. If the quality of the footage differs and if the bit-rate differs; my point is that you could have one codec delivering better/equal quality at smaller sizes. The more efficient codec would most likely be more processor intensive to render and edit but as we have seen computers seems to handle these new codecs well.

Yes in theory a smaller file can use a better methodology to create a better result.

There is a long Sony vimeo about XAVC - they seem proud of the efficiency.

In designing the codec they make choices of course, and do the choices of Sony match with your choices? for example I feel that sony tend to go blocky in the shadows. Visually normal people dont look in the shadows - so that is a great place to shave some data.. if that matches your visual aesthetic which it may not!

Sorry to beat a boring drum in this forum but everything written here about raw is ' on paper'. The reality is that Sony's interpretation of what constitutes raw is so poorly implemented that XVAC-I is a much better choice for image quality on the FS7. Hopefully this will change asap.
