Post wants 1080/60i .... But I want 720/24pN Overcranking!

I want to shoot 720/24pN at 60 fps. But the post house will only take 1080/60i. I deliver a hard drive to client after shoot. I carry a laptop w/ FCP w/ me and shoot on an HPX500. What is best work flow to upconvert for them yet shoot slow mo (sports scenes)

Two possible options:
1) import the footage into a 1080/60i project and export as 1080/60i. However, you'll have to make sure that your post house uses FCP, otherwise they may not be able to use the quicktime files FCP generates.

2) Take the camera with you and set your HPX500's SDI output to 1080i. Then play the footage on the HPX500 and have them ingest it directly off the SDI port.

Option 3, rent a P2 Portable (HPG20) for the day, and dub the footage over yourself before offloading the cards. Play it as 720/24pN in-camera, through HD-SDI output, into the Portable recording DVCPRO-HD 1080/60i... then offload the cards from the P2 Portable onto the hard disk.

Thank you Barry. I prefer option 1 best if Avid can take the QT Files. I could export as self contained QT, yes?

I'm not sure whether Avid can read those files or not. But yes, if it can, that would be your easiest and lowest cost option.

The MXF are best for Avid. Avid and P2 are a great match. QTs can require some import time. Avid can cut 720 and 1080 natively in the same timeline. It should not be a problem to mix them.

Barry's sugestions are right on, but all I am saying is the post house should be able to take this. You can not mix a Native frame rate and an over 60 frame rate in Avid, So long as you overcrank in a non-native format it should go right into the Avid.
They will have to slow down the footage in post, but it might save you a rental.

What version of MC are they on.

What frame rate in 1080?

They have:

HPX500 shooting 1080/60i frame rate is 60 (Barry, can you help here)

Thanks everyone for the replies. We are checking it all out now. As always your replies were both informative and professional.

Honestly, I've never tried so I can't answer either way with certainty. I vaguely remember once reading something about Apple using a slightly different flavor of Quicktime DVCProHD within FCP that makes it incompatible. I could have my facts completely wrong though.

The best way is to run a quick test. Take a 10-second DVCProHD MOV file and try importing it into Avid. See what happens then report back. :)

I ran into that problem doing a shoot where my cam op was shooting directly into fcp via firewire. I took the quicktime home and tried to edit in Premiere and all I got was a white screen with the audio. After hours of frustration I came upon Raylight and it got the job done. I'm not sure if Avid is the same way but the problem with fcp's quicktime and some NLEs does exist.

Does shooting slow-mo in 720pn look substantially better than shooting normally in 1080p and slowing it in post? I'm renting so I won't have the time to test my equipment before I have to shoot on Thursday.
