Hi Bluespider,

In this series, all but two of the shots were taken with a DVX100a. The shot with the rainbow was taken with a single chip Sony Digital 8, and the shot of the Air Tours sign was taken with a 16mm Bolex.

For the past couple of years I have been developing a process I affectionately call HDDI(ous), [High Definition Digital Intermediate] I needed to control the kind of source footage I used to test the system and continually renting an expensive HD camera became cost prohibitive, so I purchased a DVX and bumped the images up to 720P.

At first, we were not as concerned with the image quality – we just needed to make sure we were not stepping on the image, what we brought into the system went out the same way. As we worked through the workflow related issues, we also started developing digital imaging software that provides us with a better quality image with a lower data footprint.

If you are interested in what I am up too you can read this article about the new production paradigm published in Millimeter magazine in 1998 – http://millimeter.com/mag/video_visual_effects_industry/index.html

Yeah, the half-hour cut of Scratching the Surface just got finished this past week, sent out for replication and we'll be submitting it around. It's the forerunner to the 90 minute piece we'll be putting together from the 28 hours of footage we have to sort through...:D

Hey! I loved that video! Nice job. Very intimate and a wonderful story. Never lost intesrest in it.

Chuck--

Without bogging down this thread, I'm very interested in reading more on the process you're using with your Panasonic in post. Do you have it posted elsewhere on this site, or resources available? I'd like to have the best product available of our efforts in Africa, and the DVX100 is the best little camera I've found to carry along, so if you're willing to provide some information/resources I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

John--

Thanks for the feedback. Glad you liked it! :)

Re: Post a screenshot...

It was a missle launch at Vandenburg (SP?) In this shot it appears to be very horizontal, but it wasn't. It changed color the higher in the atmosphere it went. I guess where it looks like it exploded was when the first stage seperated from the second. I don't know, I just looked up and saw this thing going like a bat out of hell and I happened to have my DVX with me.

Re: Post a screenshot...

That's a good shot chuck, love the colors. I was just thinking how weird it would be to see that if you'd never seen it before...Wow.

Re: Post a screenshot...

ChuckS - That is a wild shot. I've never seen anything like it. You are a lucky man for having witnessed that. It's sky candy.

Lalo - Subways are always good shots. Nice stuff.

Re: Post a screenshot...

i nabbed a digital still photo of that same vandenburg launch. didnt come out nearly as cool as chucks.

Re: Post a screenshot...

ChuckS,

these grabs are from a DVX100 or DVX100A ?

I can't find any noise...extremely clean !
Did you use a special cleanning filter ?
What were your settings ?

anyway, very nice grabs, very solid, impressive !

Re: Post a screenshot...

Here's a grab from a test I'm doing at the local cemetery. I think the banding is because Premiere Pro only captures frames in 256 colors, or shades of grey in this case.

Holy crap. Was that robot versus ninjas shot with a DVX? That looks very stylish, I'm downloading the video now. Can't wait to see it.
