If this thread alone makes you want to run from filmmaking. You probably should. It's a lot tougher than this thread. After reading this thread, I feel scared, discouraged, and probably want to run away in the other direction from my dream of filmmaking.
But this is probably one of the most important threads I have ever read on this forum.
I've been through a couple of different theater training programs (as an actor, then as a director) and at least 2 or 3 people said to the actors in each instance: "if you can be happy doing anything else, do that". It's a road of heartbreak, rejection, and closed doors.
You can focus on the statistics. Or you can do what you love if you feel that's what you should really be doing.
People surmount odds greater than what's being lade out in this thread all the time. Both in terms of getting your movie made for pennies and in terms of selling it.
Look at this guy - he makes art on the head of pins that sells for $300K a pop:

(he does it by lowering his heartbeat through meditation and making carving strokes between heartbeats)
If you have that kind of dedication and ingenuity then you can make your $10K feature, no question.
How many of us would say "you can't carve Snowwhite and the 7 dwarfs inside the eye of a needle and sell it for $300K". A feat marginally harder than making a film for $10K and selling it for anything worthwhile if at all. But it can be done. Those are just the odds you're up against.
