Seems this comes up every two years or so :P

Hmmm, I have a Miller 20 head and a little Manfrotto 507 head, that set up is totally do-able, for a light weight camera. The alignment of the camera L plate would be the critical issue I think. Thanks Ryan.

On Ebay right now is a 3 axis nodal head. Search for Vinton Post Head Fluid 3 Axis Tripod Head. Buy it now for 2300 with a starting bid of 1400. Fits a 4" ball and rated for 60lbs. Looks like a nice unit. Usual disclaimers, I saw it while searching and remembered this thread.

Ryans rig would be much improved by having the 90 degree L Plate, that attaches to the large fluid head , reversed ( and extended) so that the camera goes nodal on the panning axis. That would move the camera back so the film plane is above the center of the large fluid head.

But...the problem that remains with any of those L plate basic designs is that tilting becomes non nodal. THat is over come in Ronford F4 and Weaver Stedman designs where everything can be aligned nodal. ie. Pan , tilt, rotate.

For overhead shots, I've mounted my slider to the ceiling and rotated a fluid head. Nodal point wasn't an issue for me, I liked the slight pan you got. The L-plate ideas on this thread are conceptually similar.
