FS7: Possible quick release solution for FS7 articulating arm?

I want to try and use the camera in it's naked form, so I'm going to exhaust efforts to make that work before considering any add-on rig components.

I think the Sony arm bolt is a bit crap and it got me thinking about how one could "spring load" it, to make it slightly more user friendly.

Here's my first attempt - please excuse the cellphone pic quality, but hopefully you'll get the idea. I popped into my local bike shop, just down the road from my office, and they had a seat clamp with the corrct M6 thread. I hacksawed off the head of the bolt and used it as threaded rod. It works and allows a quick way to raise and lower the arm.

Hopefully this will either work for others or kickstart some other ideas.

By the way, all of the paint around the tightening knob flaked off within 5 minutes of unboxing - the metal knurled tightener is not offset enough (2 washers in there at the mo) and happily wipes all the paint off the arm when fastened and unfastened. Hopefully new one on the way from Sony UK.

Cheers,

Ben.

Ummm, I'm not quite sure what the intention or benefit is. It seems to make it bulkier and wider than the original knob?

The intention is to create something that can quickly adjust, so I can easily rest the camera on the floor - a bit of a design oversight with the articulating arm, I think.

Turning the original knob is an awkward operation. This allows a quick flip of the lever and spin of the arm. Quick flip of the lever again and you're golden.

It's a quick release of pressure from the rosette so the arm can be repositioned without unscrewing it. I think it's a great idea. Sony should have done it. Maybe when they see this they will.

Good Job!

Ah gotcha. To be honest with everything else going on with the camera it has even occurred to me to think of this as a problem :)
