Possible Quantum Computer Breakthrough

Wow cool....

oh man some day in the future, were gonna look back and say, remeber when computers used bianary.... So arcane...

Cell phones will be more power full than a contemporary super computer...

cool, we are witnessing the "valve" equivalent of the quantum computer!

Thanks for posting that Mark, for all 3d and VFX artist, just thing of "real time" rendering withut a massive render farm and you understant why its such exciting news*

*granted we are years away, but this brings it closer, before it was speculation, not its part of the component in practice!

I hear what your saying :D

on a technical note, Russian scientists did come up with a base 10 system (Tenary) as opposed to our current base 2 (binary), I'm not sure if it worked too well,

Using a quantum system its not just the higher base, its the fact as I understand it, is that each "unit" can have multiple states AT the same time, so a unit can be a 1 and a 0 I think.

well after some brief reading about quantum computers, I've come to understand that they are still base 2 !

the only difference is that it uses a Qubit (Quantum Binary Bit), which is represented as 1 and 0 but based on the atomic "spin up" and "spin down" that represents a 1 and 0 and a 1/2 spin being both up and down,

Benifits:

Superposition {one Qubit having more than one state at the same time}

parallelism {the ability to calculate more than one function at the same time, eg f(0) + f(1) can be computed at the same time, i.e true parallelism}

Transportation {information can be transported across any distance faster than light}

now the interesting thing is, the number of calculations that can be done in ONE cycle is given as 2^n cubits, that means say we had a "64bit" version of a quantum comptuer a "64 Qubit" if you will then:

2^64 = 18,446,744,100,000,000,000

and say we had a 512 Qubit, you would have something a 1.3 with 154 zeros trailing after it, the number of atom in the universe is around 1.0 with 80 zeros after it.....

@ Hawk, try C# you will love, .net is where the money is at the moment.

:D love that game!

EDIT::

now talk about weird freakyness,

I was trying to type "Q-Bert" into google, to get an image, only I typed "B-Bert" as a typo, guess who's name appears at number 1 on google:

Thomas B "Bert" Marshall ! tell me Tom your not related to Q-Bert are you? :D

No kidding? I'll have to look up my family tree now and see if I had something to do with Q-Bert... lol

In 1969 the Apollo 11 LEM landed on the moon. The on board computer was the most compact and fastest computer (for it's size) of it's day. However, today's cell phones have more processing power than that computer.

Now, try to picture the progress 41 years form now.... I have enough trouble trying to grasp advances 10 years from now, but 41 years, it makes my head swim.

OK? But how fast can I download porn?

Yeah, last time I was at a shuttle launch, they had an astronaut talking while we all waited. And he said the same thing about the computers they had. He went on to say that the shuttle has 4 back-ups or whatever. Their back-up was a SEXTANT.

And if the computer failed, mission control would tell them which stars to align themselves with to get home.

How frickin' cool is that?
