Possible ancient artifact? Need some help...

Ok, I had no idea where to start with this, so this seemed as good a place as any.

I'm at the tide pools today, and my friend and I stumble across an odd rock. It was a solid rock with other rocks fused into it. Fairly normal, especially at a tide pool, but it still caught our eye. My friend decides to chuck it across the beach, where it hit another rock and broke in half.

This is where it got interesting. In the center of the rock, there was a sharp looking object. After cleaning it a bit, we realized it was a drill bit, which incredibly enough, was still covered in grease. Now, even odder was the fact that the drill bit did not at all look machined. The grooves appeared to have been carefully chiseled away to create the bit.

Now, I realize stuff like drill bits can wash up on a beach all the time, but encased in the center of a rock?!

I'm puzzled. No idea what type of metal it is or how it got there.

Basically, I'm wondering what my next step is. How can I go about finding out exactly what the hell this thing is? In other words, what's it made of, how old is it, and when can I expect my check for $1,000,000,000?

Any help would be appreciated. I'll try to upload a picture of it later so you can get a better idea, but my primary question is how I get ahold of a reputable source to find out more about this thing, and whether or not it's completely worthless.

Thanks in advance for commentary.

Don't tell anyone! The government is already on to you and a cover up is under way. It was nice knowing you Bryant!

In all seriousness, I'm serious.

If I'm wrong, take it to your local university geologist or etc... maybe he is a genius who has an uncertain past which made him give up his dreams of adventure... but now you have set in motion the events which he will use to redeem his past and reputation all the while finding yourselves on the adventure of a life time against the powers that be.

I need to stop watching movies.

Hey Man,
where is the picture???
This is really interesting----would love to see this thing.
Seriously, take some good pics. Post them here.
Don't just hand it off to somebody who wants to research it. Keep the artifact, let them have the pics. If they really feel it needs further testing like x-rays or whatever, then you can discuss and decide what to do with your artifact. Remember, its yours not theirs. If you just hand it off in good faith, you might not ever see it again. It's likely to languish in a drawer somewhere for the next 100 years or so.

I once found a 3lb canon ball on my uncles farm near where a major Revolutionary War Battle occurred. (He actually found it. I found it where he left it next to the barn.) I went to the museum on the battle site and asked about it. Got a lot of information from that visit but I did not dare show it to them for fear they would not give it back. It actually happened to one local guy that lived in the area. You never know.

Thanks for all the responses so far. I'll get the picture up when I'm home later tonight, probably in a couple hours. I live right next to my university, so I may just initially seek some help there like suggested.

Metal and sea water are a pretty bad combination. The "solid rock" with other rocks in it sounds like calcium/mineral build up that encased surrounding rocks. The fact it wasn't eaten away with rust means high carbon steel, which is a sign it wasn't that old (still may have value) Maybe 150 years or less? Definitely have it checked, though.

But don't start packing things for the move to the Bahamas just yet.

And Post Pics!

I'd throw it on the back and decker and bask in knowing I saved 69 cents on a drill bit.

The twist drill bit wasn't invented until 1861 anyway, which takes it out of the ancient category regardless. And if it is indeed made from a high-carbon steel that places it even more recently.

Radioactive powers anyone?

I thought we had a local Geoligist on the site here? I remember reading that here one day?

Post up a few pictures.
