Portrait mode when shooting?

hi guys

is there a way to shoot vertically with the framing like a portrait. so its like rotating the camera 90 degrees but everything is still viewed upright while still maintaining the 16:9 aspect ratio vertically? sounds dumb... but then when you rotate the image which was shot sideways now upright, will the image be stretched?

thanks!

You would have to run some post processing on the footage. I know After Effects could do it. Most NLEs could do it, but if you want it super clean, stick with an effects program. You're more likely to get artifacting with an NLE.

If you don't need the full resolution, it's probably just as easy/easier to crop it.

Is it better to do it in an NLE or in AE than to just turn the camera on its side and shoot 9:16? We need some really hi-res 9:16 (vertical) posters here where I work and I was planning on just shooting really slow framerates with the HVX turned on its side and then just take frame grabs out of the NLE and processing them as pictures. Would that work? We don't have a digital camera capable of taking a high-enough res picture for what we need. Still waiting on my HVX... hopefully next week sometime it'll come in.

Hi-res and HVX200 do not go together in the same sentence. If you need a hi-res photo for print work, why would you use a 19020x1080 72dpi screen grab, when you could use a 12megapixel DSLR to do a much better job at about 1/10 of the price of an HVX?

Even a cheap 3MP digital camera will probably produce better results. The HVX is a great video camera, not meant for print. At all.

So what you're saying is that screen grabs from a 1920x1080 camera wouldn't work well printed? The reason I'm looking at doing it this way is that the biggest still camera we've got is only 6MP and won't give us an image big enough for our six-foot tall posters. We're buying either an HVX or an XH-A1 anyway, so if that would work, we'd just use it.

Grabs will work.. they're not the best.

Nor is an HVX the best bang for your buck in that situation.

I've had major record labels use a screen grab from a video for an album cover but to blow up the image you'd be better off using a DSLR in RAW format.

Remember the HVX os a little up rezed so you're mot getting a true 1080. (Not true of the 100A)

My Nikon D50 gives me true 3000x2000 resolution at 6mp and not at the highest setting. That will set you back about $450

Not to mention the noise issues you'll face if you don't get a HVX 100A

Conclusion.. it will work... there are other better cheeper methods though.

The HVX outputs at 1280 or 1440x1080. On a six-foot poster, that's 18-20 DPI, or less than a third of what you'd want at a minimum.
