Portable mp3 Recorder

Each week I record two one you lectures for podcasts. I've been doing the recording by plugging up my Senn G2 ENG wireless to my MacBook Pro. Works great as long as I'm there and I don't have my gear rented out. So it's time to rethink my setup.

I know that mp3 player/recorders exist that have line in recording. What's a good one that's easy to use?

Of course I'd like to run a lapel mic into it...nothing at all fancy...actually, I need to do all of this for under $200. Any decent options out there?

The research I've done says that the iRiver is a good option...but they maybe don't make the model that records via line in?

I can't say for sure, I don't know much about Podcasting. The one I listen to regularly, is mostly centered on live walk throughs of the Disney Parks of all things. He uses a setup with the iRiver and stereo lapel mic, that really gives you a sort of 3D sound. What exactly are you trying to accomplish? Is it a straight studio talkshow, event, or what?

Nevermind, I just reread your original post. Feel free to Duh Huh me... :) I was looking thru the Sweetwater's catalogue, and saw they have a good selection of podcast gear, including a mixer that will record to an iPod. Check them out, it might give you some ideas.

I use the Olympus LS-10 - small and pocketable and will record up to 24/96 as well as MP3.

Cool! So, how close do you have to be to the device to record clear audio?

I'll just tell you that most of these lectures take place in a room that's maybe the size of a high school classroom, 30 or so people attend, and the speaker walks around a bit - maybe side to side covering a length of the floor about 15' wide.

So, if I could set a device like this Olympus up on a table where the speaker will usually be withing 5-7', would I get good audio? Or maybe I could have him put it in his shirt pocket?

John, do you have examples of your podcasts?

Thanks!!!

I'm thinking I should just get another cheap wireless mic...

The reason I want a new setup is cuz I'm often busy on a shoot (with my Senns) on the day they're lecturing.

An iRiver and cheap wireless would cost less than a Zoom or LS-10.

Ok, I think I found a good work around...get a wired/powered lav like the AudiobTechnica ATR35s that will plug right into the iRiver E100 mp3 recorder. That should do the trick, eh?

It depends on the ambient noise and the sound level being recorded.

If the room is quiet I would have thought this would be OK.

I don't do podcasts - never ever.

I use the LS-10 as a great little carry-anywhere recorder (it's with me all the time) and normally with its own mics at 24/44.1. I am very happy with it; construction is solid and high quality and the batteries last ages. I have never had batteries fail on me, I seem to think that they have been in so long I ought to change them.

I hope this helps.
