Poor Video Quality In PP but Not On Tape

I have been running into a lot of problems with my Premiere Pro 2.0 and computer. The latest:

I shot some footage after not shooting for a while with my DVX then captured it into premiere and started to edit and I noticed that the video looked unusually bad in the 2 windows inside Premiere. So I thought maybe the viewing quality was set to draft, but it was still set on highest.

Then I guessed maybe since the video I just captured was like the first time i shot at 30fps in a long time, that something in the scene file might have been wrong, so I asked on the forum about the scene file.

I recently brought in some 24p footage that I edited a month ago that I know for sure looked perfectly crisp on my laptop screen then. Now, the edges of peoples faces look pixleated and its easy to see squares in the color. Almost like bringing a small picture into Microsoft Paint and stretching it to make it bigger.

Nothing else on my computer (DVDs, games, photos and even playback of the same video files with WMP or QT) looks poor.

Anyone have any ideas about this?

You have your viewport window set to "automatic quality" or "low quality" Force it to "high quality" and the full resolution file will render out during playback.

Video playback may skip if you do this.

How do I go about changing this? The only thing I know how to do is right click both viewing boxes and go to quality and set it to high quality instead of draft or automatic, and that doesn't change anyhting

If your files are being brought in via Quicktime, sometimes the DV playback on PC's is set to low quality automatically for playback.

Try playing back the video files in any stand-alone media player, if they look fine there, then chances are the video accleration is doing something funky to play the video back in the NLE at an acceptable speed.

check your editing settings, make sure that they are set up for the proper editing codec. use a DV codec at 30p with no fields in the custom projects dialog. make sure that all else is in order there as well. you can just copy and paste your material to a new project with the right settings if they are bad in the one you are using.
