I'm a huge Scorsese fan. But I think he's got better works in him. And for all the things going for Aviator it was flawed and at least for me it lacked soul. If you haven't seen MDB yet I suggest you check it out. I think it's amazing that it was shot in 37 days. That doesn't diminish the film at all especially when you read about the budget challenges and arm wrangling that occured to get the film made.
I don't feel sorry for Scorsese. I don't know why we've put this overwhelming sense of worth to winning an oscar. Lesser works have won oscars and it doesn't diminish what Scorsese has accomplished. In the last two films he's had huge budgets and had final say on his films. I feel like his best work came out of when he was struggling with smaller budgets and studio challenges.
If you want to mention films and actors being robbed, what about Jim Carrey? Or Paul Giamatti?

Maybe it's because you weren't homecoming king.
Oscars are like state-awarded medals back home... after certain people got theirs, you are better off not sharing the podium with them.
I have no place commenting on this Hollywood tradition, and I realize that it's a part of the schmooze biz. Please forgive me for speaking purely hypothetically: If I ever get an invitation, I'll politely decline.

what makes me sad about scorcese is that, having had a storied career and the ability at this point in his life to make just about any movie (or anybody's career) that he wants, he still seems to hang around waiting for this "critical nod" from the academy. does he really want to be there anymore? i'd go read a book.

Can you explain?[/quote]
Heh well a bit strong in my words but... I do feel that the whole awards process is all about money. When money comes into play then there is going to be greed. The industry is run by corporations whose sole goal is to make money. To have a movie nominated or even win an award is money in the bank.
So, money is going to be spent to schmooze the academy. The politics of the business are going to come into to play. A favor here, a favor there.
Sadly, there will be those that win that shouldn't have. Luckily, there will be some deserved winners. But, it's an unfair playing field. A field based on money and greed.

Apparently you're new to the Hollywood film industry......
i have to say, i found nothing of any real worth in "million dollar baby" and am disappointed that it won.
i thought it was boring, slow, long, poorly acted, technically weak, had a tired and lame screenplay, and nearly all of the supporting characters were trite and/or useless (the retarded kid, the white trash family, even morgan freeman).
it felt to me like a bunch of stars got together, farted, and won an oscar because clint is just such a likeable guy. it didn't look like it required much effort or risk on anyone's part, and, though much more emotional than The Aviator, i found it lame somehow.
i'm sure a lot of you will bash me for this, but i for one felt that the aviator showed a heck of a lot more substance, hard work and skill than did MDB.
on a general note, the whole awards show in general made me sick to my stomach. all the speeches blew - inarticulate, uninteresting, and self-important. chris rock i thought sucked as well, though i thought sean penn was lame to stomp on his joke about jude law,
also, apparently 25% of the academy is comprised of actors, and you can't help but wonder if they're just just voting for themselves and essentially giving themselves the oscar.
Hans and Schmolze are NOT in the Hollywood film industry, and neither am I. Maybe that's why their words resonate in my mind...
...and well, maybe I'd go if I got invited to a technical session, but I really really really hate pretentious events. I'd hope that this wouldn't suddenly change if I made some great contribution to movie industry, chance of which are close to zero. At this point in life, it's not about a career or success anyway (yes, Jim, nobody would vote for me even if I gave them bags of money ), it's about enjoying learning new and interesting things.
I don't envy Scorsese or Eastwood or anyone their millions (at least I think I don't), and I feel minus infinity sympathy for anyone not winning an Oscar. It really leaves me indifferent. What might interest me are their acting/directing capabilities and their personal character, but not whether they get an Oscar or not.
your right schmolze... I will bash.. I'll bash you good! (in homer voice)
you just sound like an angry kid because the film you wanted to win didn't. boohoo. Reading your post, you came off as rather ignorant. Did you even watch Million Dollar Baby, or were you sleeping through the screening?
fine you thought it was boring and long...
but poorly acted? I am sure I am not the only one here that thinks your out to lunch.
Also tell me what exactly was technically weak... I am betting that you don't even have a clue what that statement actually means.. sounds like you just put it in cause 'Technically' is a big word.... cough.
tired and lame screenplay eh.... when was the last time you read it?
You also say the supporting characters were useless? How so? they are called supporting characters for a reason..
I wanted the Aviator to win for Scorsesse as well.. (although I have not yet seen it, so I won't comment on it).. but I do think he deserves an oscar for his work.
I agree with the bottom half of your post sort of.. although I do think Sidney Lumet had one of the best speeches I have ever heard at the oscars.
I liked his speech as well. I also liked the guy who got the humanitarian award (sounds like he is quite used to talking to large groups of people), and I have to say that I enjoyed Jamie Foxx's speech. I thought it was classy.
As far as Eastwood, I love him as an actor. He has more range than most people gave him credit for (until recently). As a director, the only movie of his that I didn't nod off while watching was Josey Wales. All the rest...zzzzzzzzz
