Well, that's not going to happen. ;D

Re: Politics

If it's in the Cafe - why not allow personal experessions? That's what the Cafe was intended for, to my understanding, and that's to be a place where we can all chat freely.

Now name calling, etc shouln't be allowed, but that's because you wouldn't want that in normal conversation too. If you have to resort to insulting individuals for their subjective opinions, you likely don't have a very good point in the first place...or at least a full understanding of your point.

Can't we all just get along? :-/

Where is the dialogue you got as your signature from?

I can't figure which film it is from. Maybe I haven't watched it.

The avatar is from true romance, right?

Araujofh, John's quotes are from The Return of The Living Dead.
Its no Night, its no Dawn, but damn it is GREAT!! Just one of those movies you can watch at anytime, in any mood. A must have in any DVD library.

". . .it's not a bad question, Burt!" ::)

Re: Politics

Just throwing out some ideas …

Because of my profession, I’ve intentionally stayed out of the recent political discussion hullabaloo (especially the draft thread).

While I understand the thought process that led to the decision to allow no political discussion, it does seem like such policy is borderline of walking that proverbial slippery slope.  While it’s clear to all that this is Jarred’s board and he can do what he likes, but in this case, is it the right approach?  Such draconian measures are akin to throwing out the baby with the bath water.  This reminds me of the Steve Martin movie “The Jerk” when he is working at the circus guessing people weight.

Moderator: Step right up ladies and gentleman and welcome to the Café ala DVX where you can “yap about whatever you want here."

Forum visitor: So we can talk about whatever we want?

Moderator:  Yep. You can talk about anything in this general area right in here. Anything below the stereo and on this side of the bicentennial glasses. Anything between the ashtrays and the thimble. Anything in this three inches right in here in this area. That includes the Chiclets, but not the erasers.  But otherwise, feel free to yap about whatever you like.

Do you see where I am going with this?

Politics has become such a dirty word and it really shouldn’t.  We should be encouraging such dialog not suppressing it.  For many aspiring film makers the subject matter of politics (or current events) is inescapable.  From Elvis’ “ITNOG”, to any Oliver Stone movie, to Black Hawk Down, the Passion of Christ, Moore’s Fahrenheit 911, and yes, even Star Wars has the core element of politics in it.  It’s a part of our daily lives and we shouldn’t be sticking our heads in the sand hoping that it will go away.  It won’t.  It’s like gun control. Instead of identifying the true source of the problem, it’s all too easy to take a broad brush stroke and blame the gun (or in this case politics) and be done with it.  And like gun control, the issue is not about the discussion of politics, but rather moderators enforcing the rules.  There’s nothing wrong with a heated exchange every so often.  It’s a good way to relieve steam and to air varying points of view.  We all know the rules.  If someone were to get out of line, you give the violator(s) several warnings and if the bad behavior continues then you send him or her on their merry way permanently.  It’s not that hard (I deal with it every day).  If the powers that be are concerned about this negative karma spilling into other forums, then as moderators you ruthlessly crush the instigators before it gets out of hand.  More often than not, it will always be the same bad eggs that create trouble regardless of what topic it is or what forum they are on.

And finally for those that do not want to read such topics – it’s simple, move on to the topic that does interest you.  However, don’t penalize others because YOU are not interested in such discussions.  It’s funny that many of the people advocating diversity and freedom of speech are also the same folks championing the suppression of other views when it runs contrary to their own.

Rant off.

Re: Politics

So moderators, has this discussion led to any final decisions regarding this topic?

I'm obviously biased, but I think there has been some very strong points to leave the Cafe open to political discussions.

What do you guys think?

Re: Politics

Jarred has said "No poli talk" There's really no discussion anymore. So let's all just respect that.

Re: Politics

Communication folk and sociologists have studied flame wars. The Web is unique because it's it lacks any of the feedback of a communicator's intent.

When communicating in person we have body language, eye contact, vocal feedback and the ever-looming threat of a right hook to the jaw. Walk away from a threat and run if you have to. I like to think about the huge chasm of difference between a person's smile and a Web smiley face. Not only do we get the smile feedback but the eyes turn kind and the body relaxes.

On the phone we have vocal feedback. If someone's voice starts to rise we have a choice to either try to mitigate that anger or stoke the fire. We can walk away by hanging up.

For a letter, as kids we all learn the etiquette of formal writing in order to avoid misunderstandings. Formal writing is as old as civilization because we learned early on that we could unitentionally burn bridges that were otherwise sound. Formal writing is contemplated and deliberate and is filled with deference and mitigating words like "dear" "sir" "kind" "consideration" and "regard."

def·er·ence n
1. polite respect, especially putting another person’s interests first
2. submission to the judgment, opinion, or wishes of another person.

So the web has the speed of in-person or phone communication but lacks any of the feedback. At the same time it more closely resembles written communication but it seems to lack the time-tested and mitigating deference and formal etiquette.

My point is we can't have it both ways. We are each still responsible for deference and civility. We have to be complative and deliberate in deference and in mitigating the potential for burning bridges that don't need to be burned.

Or not. As a last resort, if bad turns to worse, we can always walk away.

Re: Politics

Nice takes by both of you (Ranger included). I still have to think that the problem is that some people wont walk anwyay. The NET gives one INTERNET MUSCLES (Liken this to BEER MUSCLES or the person in their car flippin you off while they speed away). I personally love heated eabtes and spirited conversation and have been guilty in the past of running some smack but damn if I have to think its just not a good idea. Too many Yahoo's and the MODS will have to find this fine line of when to intervene and when not to. People come here to chat and learn and share information and POLITICS are just one of those subjects that gets people going (We have members from all over the world) and should most likely be best left unsaid.
