Im starting to get alot of complaints again about politics and people insulting each other crossing the line.. do you guys want a board in the cafe here just for politics?

And as for the name calling, you all know im very liberal on the freedom of speech here, but i draw the line of jackass remarks to each other, lets try and keep it cool k?

Re: Politics

I have no problems discussing really any topic in the Cafe but agree when the namecalling and jabs come in it demeans the board and community. You know what Im talking about; many times there are posts that if read between the lines there is a jab or condensending remark. We are also getting complaints of "Why are the Mods closing this and that?" Because of the exact reasons mentioned above. You might not think a big deal but consider a pre-emptive strike.

Re: Politics

Hi Jarred,

It isn't just politics. There are some guys that just love insulting others in other areas of the forum.

All the best

Fidel.

Re: Politics

Opening up a Political board could be a good thing...or a bad thing. I think the key would be that it would have to be like Las Vegas, "What happens on the Political Board, stays on the Political Board." I've seen the battles on Indieclub when they formed the Coffee House. There were some spirited debates in the Coffee House, some of which I participated, which went well, but a few spilled onto the main board which caused problems. If you form a politcial board make sure that this is spelled out.

Personally, I like the idea only because I don't like to get on political only boards because half the people on those boards are total psychos. I like to have discussions with with other film/video makers because we have similar backgrounds.

I say tread carefully.

Take care,

Scott

Re: Politics

I vote it's a bad thing, and the destruction of IndieClub just confirms my fears about it. We don't NEED it to continue on the purpose of DVXUser, it will likely only lead to ill will, and there are more than enough political boards out there, why soil this one? I say it's best to keep the camel's nose out of the tent, and if someone really wants to discuss politics so bad, they can set up "PoliticsUser.com" or something, and keep DVXUser doing what it's supposed to do.

Just like the DVX doesn't have a "still photo" button or "digital zoom" or "webcam"... not every tool has to do every thing. Sometimes it's okay for a hammer to be a hammer, and a screwdriver to be a screwdriver. And it should be okay for this board to be about what it's about, without dragging the ill will and arguments over politics into it.

Re: Politics

I think if you set up a board like that it is a nice filter for those not interested in it, like me. So if you are into that kind of thing, you can isolate it from the rest of the boards and if you are not, you don't have to look at it at all.

I think it could potentially solve a lot of present and potential problems.

Re: Politics

..yeah , i dont mind people talking politics at all because they are important, but if its slowing the server down in the least, or spreading to other forum areas..(which is nearly inevitable) all so that people can exchange low blows on varying points of view on the politics of this world ..which doesnt really change anyones mind in the end anyway.. then they should go to a political board.

Re: Politics

I debate politics all day every day (almost) as part of my job and other commitments. I like having someplace where I don't have to do that, although my genetic makeup compells me to weigh in no matter how mightily I try to resist the urge (although I'm never uncivil). I like discussing movies without worrying about something as divisive as politics.

A politics section would be fine, but unfortunately, I don't think most people have the self-discipline to keep it in that forum, especially after it gets heated. As evidence, I point not only to IndieClub but also to almost any other message board anywhere on the 'net, as well as DVXuser.com before the moderators started being very vigilant.

There's nothing wrong with a verboten topic on a message board -- as long as that's clear up front.

Re: Politics

I agree. The last thing I want the other users to know about is my political orientation. So much gets tinted by politics these days...

Take Michael Moore. I think his film making abilities are completely obfuscated by his political views. I am not going to comment on either one, though. :D

My point is that I'd hate DVX users starting to discount one another because they may disagree with other people's political point of view.

Let's keep it technical and artistic, and keep politics out of it - if I may add my two cents.

Re: Politics

For what it’s worth and has already been pointed out, it will be divisive and it will spill over (look at the track record so far, how many locks?). No amount of warnings or locks will stop someone’s opinion from bleeding into attacks on users in irrelevant threads on this board. Everyone has already seen it happen here (several times) and I feel it’s a reason that some valuable contributors have backed off from this board or stopped participating at all (Slapdragon) imo.

How many times can anyone say it, go to a political board if you’re passionate about debating it. Religion, politics, belief systems cannot be argued. Science can be. It’s the equivalent to screaming in a demonstrators face during a political rally, it’s freaking useless. Does anyone think they’ll sway a personal belief? I don’t give a damn about anyone’s politics but my own and I respect everyone’s right to their own perceptions.(wow that sounded self righteous, sorry)

Is it important to discuss issues? Yes. Is it a good thing to share another perspective on an issue? Yes. Does it do any good to attack someone’s perceptions or beliefs? HELL NO. Separating that in a civil manner is subjective to the point of being impossible to moderate in most cases.

Re: Politics

I'd say 9 out of 10 political discussions end up becoming very emotional. When people are emotional and defensive, it's human nature for them to go on the attack. It's about then that name-calling begins and we say things we regret later.

Certainly not a situation to be welcomed by a forum such as this, where we need to be trusting of each other, to learn, to share. Let the political rants live somewhere else. Allowing such discourse here will only block effective communication.

Thanks for considering my opinion.

Re: Politics

Let's just leave the board as it is. Don't bring any politics along, because it tends to be get personal.
Just like many have said, there are other boards to discuss this.

All the best

Fidel.

Agreed.

Re: Politics

Though I am fairly new, I will put in my 1/2 a cent.

A political board would add something to the forum but with it comes the inevitable chance that one or two would ruin it for all of us. Those who enter it should know ahead of time to expect to be ridiculed for your beliefs by one or two who hold valid points of view but lack the manners or professionalism to intelligently express their point of view without calling someone a name.

I like this forum and I personally think it is one of the best run forums on the internet and we have such a wealth of knowledge here that is shared.

I say let there be a political forum, but firmly let people know not to take it to the sections, because I go into the Post-Production forum to view threads on stuff I want to know. I go into the Audio Section to see what people are using or doing. If I would anter the political forum, I mainly go to see why someone thinks the way they do politically or about a certain issue, which helps me re-evaluate why I believe what I believe.

In a political forum you cannot let someone else's ignorance or lack of manners goad you. If an ignorant comment is made, don't respond with another ignorant comment. You will quickly find out what is truly in someone's heart in the way they respond to issues and people who deep, strong beliefs based on their education and thought process.

The forum can be tested, if it has a good response keep it on. If it gets out of hand remove it. If you do not want to participate in a political forum, then do not go into it. Just like I do not go into Avid forum, I don't use it, so I Don't go in there.

Just my thoughts.

Re: Politics

I received a threat of physical violence from a forum member in response to some very light moderation during this summer's round of "political discussion".

Sorry, but I think it's been well demonstrated that reasonable political discussion isn't a viable option on this board. It inevitably gets personal and spreads tension and ill-will to other forums. It's all well and good to say "don't take the bait", but in practice there's a lot of baiting and bait-taking. As mentioned it only takes a couple people to ruin the entire forum. The mere presence of a political forum is an invitation for insufferable @ssholes. It draws in otherwise reasonable folks like moths to the flame and people lose their judgment. Ok, so some of you don't want to go to the politics forums because of the crazies. Guess what, pathologic personalities can spot a free-for-all from light years away--so helloooo loonies!

As I've already mentioned we've tried it both ways on the forum--virtually unmoderated and with some judicious moderation, and unmoderated political discussion didn't work out. So what if you create a separate forum--it makes no difference. The Cafe is *already* a separate forum. Believe me, this will be a better place for *not* knowing everyone's political affiliations, especially in a time when the political landscape is so polarized and emotions are running high.

Re: Politics

Jarred of course has the final call.

My final take is to keep it out. Just forget about it. Unfortunately there are members and guests that will not be able to handle it as we all hope it could be or should be handled. We've had POST's start with "Happy Fourth of July" and suddenly turn into "F this and F that and F you..."

I say NO POLITICS in my final thoughts. Join a forum that is all politics if you want to but keep it out of here.

Jarred?

Re: Politics

I agree with almost all the posts. Ya gotta wonder why political types would want to post here, or who would want to read them when there are plenty of places elsewhere for such debate.

On the other hand, we do have a right to free speech and no amount of debate on this thread should be allowed to impinge on that right. Thomas Jefferson said (and I'm paraphrasing), the only right that a Citizen should not have is the right to give up his rights.

I may not wish to post to a political thread here, or even read one, but I'm not ready to have my right to do so taken from me.
