Re: Politics

I don't think we're talking about making a rule set in stone, where under Cafe ala DVX it says "yap about whatever you want here. (except politics)" I think what we're suggesting (or at least I am) is for everyone to just agree to disagree. To realize that we all have different views, and discussions about them get very emotional. So I think we should just have a communal agreement to just keep it outta here, and take it to a different board.

Let's keep this fun, guys!

Re: Politics

Thats the hard part. I strongly believe that the majority of us can chill and have conversation and agree to disagree but its the Yahoo's that ruin it for everyone (Seems that way with everything huh?)

Re: Politics

I agree John. I would like to be able discuss some things with people and see where they stand, especially here where there are higly intelligent people who obviously know what is going on in the world. Since I usually have one computer that almost seems to be a DVXuser.com computer the others I edit and load video on, i am constantly signed into dvxuser. I continually search the site for info and find it. people are helpful, and you naturally want to know their opinions on a variety of matters.

Like someone said you can say Happy 4th and it turn into an FU fest, or do a presidential poll, go into it and it has been locked. There just is an unnecessary desire from some to throw in profanity at points in a conversation when they have nothing else to say but your an #4%^**( or whatever there imaginitive minds can come up with.

It happens on the Cafe and people take to the other forums for no reason. Adding a political forum would be nice, but obviously as we just experienced in a post in the past hour maybe it's not worth it.

Re: Politics

I think U.S. citizens should vigorously defend their rights as accorded under the Constitution.  A good first step would be actually reading and understanding your rights.

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Very simply, there are no first amendment rights here.  Just like a private sector workplace, the first amendment does not apply.  This has been affirmed by the Supreme Court.  Why?  Because the First Amendment states that "Congress shall make no law...abridging the freedom of speech...".  Congress has been interpreted to cover the entire Federal government, but even so, there are still certain restrictions as to what the First amendment covers.

Since DVXUser.com is not the government--no First Amendment rights here.  It doesn't cover your parents, your private employer, or your favorite web site.
;D

Re: Politics

Good lesson there Barry. Simply put the constitution is to protect the peoples from its govt.  It does not apply to the private sector.

Knowing this as educated individuals it puts things into much more of a perspective.

We have many ammendments to the constitution that are important to a free peoples. That is their intent. Each and EVERY ammendment. Although some may not understand why.. There is a reason why it was drafted in the grand design of our great country.

Re: Politics

I personally don't think something like politics should just be eliminated outright. It's possible for people to get into an FU fest over which NLE they should use.

I simply think with something that is as open and international as DVXuser it just needs to be moderated well which i believe it is. Simply lock posts or ban users causing problems. This is really the only way to keep a forum safe.

I don't think that making a politics forum is a good idea, it simply attracts something that really doesn't have to do with the rest of the forum. I find the Cafe is a place for the people who use the rest of the forum to talk about stuff that isn't related to the rest of the forum which is filmmaking/DVX info...

That being said, people who are regular users and respected members in other parts of the forum won't generally be the kinds of people who will start to get crazy and emotional when it concerns other things such as politics. You will get crazies though who with only 10 posts will start ranting off at a respected member about something as politics. These people need to be eliminated right away as they ruin it for everyone.

Having proper moderation needs to be very specific and put out the fires early. Saying something as simple as "No Politics" wouldn't solve the root core of the problem which is just people who are using the forum inappropriately.

Having something like "no politics" is as bad as saying "no rock music" because it causes people to be violent and use drugs. Just because it's been linked to it doesn't mean it's the cause. Assholes are assholes and will always be assholes and will find reasons to act out in this way regardless. People who listen to rock music aren't all drug addicts and kill people. The people that do that would do it regardless, they just happen to listen to rock music as well. Same thing goes for the politics. People that get worked up over politics are simply people that get worked up regardless. It's not simply the politics they get worked up over.

I think it's important to allow people to discuss politics to allow them to share ideas and information. I just think it needs to be moderated on a specific basis to ensure that the policies and rules set by the forum are adheared to.

ThinSpirit, your whole post was right on the money. It perfectly describes the problem being discussed here and in the greater public as a whole.

As far as moderating is concerned, I believe that it makes for difficult choices, but necessary to adhere to the "rules" of civility. Even the U.S. House of Representatives has a Sergeant At Arms, who at the direction of the Speaker, will remove those Representatives calling an opponent !@$#@$# and &*^E#! But nothing that limits the subjects on which they may speak.

When we first signed up here at DVXuser, we agreed to the following:

"You agree, through your use of this forum, that you will not post any material which is false, defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy, or otherwise in violation of ANY law. This is not humorous and legal actions can be taken against you. You also agree not to post any copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you or you have consent from the owner of the copyrighted material. Spam, flooding, advertisements, chain letters, pyramid schemes, and solicitations are also inappropriate to this Dvxuser.com forum."

and

"...Anyone who feels that a posted message is objectionable is encouraged to notify an administrator of this forum immediately. We have the rights to remove objectionable content, within a reasonable time frame, if we determine that removal is necessary..."

I for one, still agree to these rules and for those who don't, well, let them bear the consequenses.

Re: Politics

I'm with you guys... let's keep it to filmmaking imo. Sure it's fun to get panties in a knot and argue this and that politically (which i'm guilty of),but I think it detracts from the spirit and founding purpose of the site. You CAN spread something too thin...

Re: Politics

alright... majority wins, no politics. And as for the name calling, all mods have the go ahead to delete a post that gets out of hand, and if a memeber keeps acting up we will just ban them. Sucks I know but its gotta be done to just keep things cool.

You are right on that.

I totally agree.

All the best

Re: Politics

Hey John,

Where is the dialogue you got as your signature from?

I can't figure which film it is from. Maybe I haven't watched it.

The avatar is from true romance, right?

Re: Politics

I have an argument for politics on the forum...

The the namesake of this forum is the DVX100.  This product is manufactured in part to tell stories through a time-based medium.  Right?  Ultimately this camera is just a tool; what is really important is the stories you tell with it!

Stories are about life: be it politics, religion, relationships, hardships, triumphs...or just day-to-day life.  Whatever you choose to do!

We can either choose to be a bunch of techies, and just talk about filmmaking and f-stops and quote the DVX100 instruction manual...or we can include intelligent conversation about the world around us that enriches our minds and lives, adding to the inspiration of the stories we tell with this camera.

I'm sure Faulker, Twain, Conrad and all the other great authors we read didn't sit around only talking about the pens through wrote with and the paper they wrote on.  They surely observed and discussed the world around them, no matter how controversial it may be.

Let's not just be techies, lets be storytellers.  As long as there is a forum labeled like the Cafe, then I am all for politics, religion, whatever!

As for moderation.  If the U.S. legal system starting eliminating our rights based on the fact that illegals things *might* occur, I'd feel like we were living under a dictatorship.  If things get out of hand, just wait until it really gets out of hand, then shut it down.  It really is as simple as that. (to clarify: I'm speaking about moderating this on a thread-by-thread basis, I'm totally against an all-out banned based upon the potential of it getting out of hand)

Re: Politics

if it has already gotten out of hand then proper moderation hasn't been occurring... or proper reporting of violations at least. People on the forum need to realize that there are rules and regulations that must be adheared to. The forum is created by Jarred. Bottom line, the rules Jarred makes are the ones that go. He gives us the opportunity to voice our opinions about his decisions but the forum is his to control however he chooses. you don't like it, go somewhere else or make your own.

I'm voicing my opinion that outright saying a topic can not be discussed will cause a lot more problems than just moderating on a thread-by-thread basis. I think as soon as it appears a thread will start to get out of hand (usually this can be seen with one post) then eliminate it right then and there. Delete that post that doesn't follow the rules and lock the thread. It prevents people from starting anything. If they then make another thread asking about why a thread was deleted or removed that is also against the rule. Repeat offenders simply get banned. It's possible there will be difficult people who will try their darndest to make a point, just don't let them... it takes away their power and keeps them off the board.

People could easily get into a heated argument over canon or panasonic...

Re: Politics

In case anyone hasn't noticed--we have been moderating threads on an individual basis--and will continue to do so. However, keep in mind that Jarred and most of the mods take a dim view of political threads based on past history. Make everyone's life easier by being self-moderating and controlling your bad self. This applies to all of the forums. ;D

==Self-Moderation==
-Don't bait
-Don't take bait
-Be slow to give or take offense
-No personal attacks or insults
-If you get carried away and post some garbage--delete the post yourself
-Don't get into pissing matches
-Endless ranting by making huge numbers of posts in a single thread is not cool
-Please don't start new sub threads to "prove your point"
-And lastly...Respect each other

Any controversial threads will have a definite shelf life. Like fish and visitors--they start to stink after 3 days.

I've had to do that one on more than one occasion. :)

Yes, lets keep it to filmmaking... and football!

GO SKINS!

Re: Politics

I'd like to thing I don't waste my posts and don't post anything unless it's useful to someone. Forums are about the sharing of information, not for people's personal expressions. Whenever I post it's to give information on something or to ask a question to gain information. Expressing opinions has never really been something I've been too interested in on message boards unless it is someone asking my opinion. I think it's also important to share opinions objectively and with reason and backing that is appropriate.

Don't say Panasonic DVX is the best because everything else sucks... that's not a good reason. If you say the DVX is the best because it's 24p and has a great latitude then you're on the right track. These are facts and most people will agree with facts.

I think the point i'm trying to make is don't be an asshat simply for the sake of being an asshat. Share some information but keep your beliefs and opinions to yourself.
