Hi

Sorry I am quite the newbie here. I was wondering if anyone had the chance to play with a Polarizing filter when shooting in 4K with a GH4?

Any pros or cons about using such filter? Tips? Any brand recommendation?

Thanks!

Well, I am not an expert but poralizing filters reduce bright and increase saturation on image. Some people says it make skin look artificial and plain, but for me is a matter of taste

Thanks. Since I am mostly shooting landscape I do not care about Skin tone... It will not degrade however the sharpness of the image?

Best use of a polarizing filter with landscapes would be reducing glare on water as well as getting a bluer sky. Should not noticeably reduce sharpness unless it is a low grade filter.

Thanks. I was interested in getting this model from Kenko : Zeta EX Circular PL (http://www.kenkoglobal.com/photo/filters/pl/zeta_ex_circular_pl.html) unless mistaken Kenko is a good brand.

Today I am using an ND8 Filter from them and very happy with it.

Any recommendation for a "Variable Neutral Density Filters"? I am considering this model as well (http://www.kenkoglobal.com/photo/filters/nd/variable_ndx.html)

Thanks

I have heard far to many negatives about variable ND filters to ever consider buying one.

Polarizers do a lot more then just cut glare - they can clean up an outdoor shot that you didn't even realize was suffering from reflected light smear until you see it without it.

Skies can become A LOT bluer. Like WOW bluer.

They also can give the cool effect of allowing you to shoot through a window that might otherwise be too obscured by reflections on it.
Like if your camera is out on the side walk and you are shooting in through a window on people at a restaurant table for instance. Reflections on the window that obscure what is behind it can be HUGELY reduced with a polarizing filter. Neat trick.

EDIT: That Kenko looks pretty darn nice.

Thanks everyone... I will get an ND2 and ND4 on top of my ND8 then, and just place an order for the Zeta EX Circular PL Kenko... (I am from Japan) and I will let you know!

I am not like you guys a pro, just a Hobbyist and right now in Japan the light is really difficult to work with at this time of year.

Thanks!

PS if you are curious this is what I do for fun https://www.youtube.com/user/TokyoStreetView (GH4 and AX100).

i bought one many years ago and never really used it. its all personal preference but im not a fan or artificial / high contrast looking images. getting rid of reflections is the reason i got mine.. then i never found a situation where i needed to remove any.
