Polarized filter setting

1. on a circular filter is it ok to just set it for the sky or top of the lens and leave it or is that something that you constantly need to adjust. I'm shooting on a small boat all hand held so it will not be easy to keep adjusting the filter.

2. Should you use a UV filter in conjunction with the polarized filter?

Any tips on using filters??? (1st time for me)

Thanks!

In order for the polarizer to be most effective, it must be adjusted for the angle of incidence of the sunlight. There should be a mark on the rim of the filter, it should be pointing towards the sun.

A UV filter still makes sense with a CP, not only for protection, but for cutting the haze that you'll often find on the water. Just make sure that you don't get vignetting at short focal lengths that can result from stacking filters with wide rims.

If you want the maximum effect on the sky from your polarizer, shoot at a 90 degree angle from you and the sun.

If you do pans with a polarizer, the sky will appear to change brighness, usually. You will also be able to see into the water, if you have the phase set properly.
