F3: Poet

Continuing my weird journey with the F3, which I struggle to get corporate 'popping' colours from but seems to sing on more artsy projects.

Cine1, Grade in Resolve with slight 'off' look - for example blue channel shadows are raised in the first image..

Poet.

So you're having a weird F3 journey hey? I don't know what you exactly mean with corporate popping colours but to me it sounds like you should shoot in a normal rec709 type gamma for that to happen?

Yep im after a 709 look but (well a nikon D3/D600 stills look) with a bit more flex and a little less video/sony/flouro for 'regular' jobs, but not this one.

Do you like the above images?

Very nice Sam thanks for posting.

I've also been using my F3 mostly with the cine gammas. I now have an FS7 and will experiment with Cine EI mode and using the MLUTs, which I didn't have on my F3. I really don't have an issue with using cine or hypergammas and the paint functions to get dial in the look I want. Having a nice calibrated 17 inch Sony OLED also gives me a lot of confidence of my settings on set.

Here is a smudge from the Broll Cam - FS100 with mamiya 80mm and sock - free lensing..

Ferrari Profile, aimless grade in Resolve.

I think you guys are fighting a seriously uphill battle using conventional gammas with the F3. SLOG properly exposed (that means none of this silly ETTR business) and recorded in 10-bit, yielded me far-and-away the best results I ever got out of the F3.

I agree with you Mark. Just shot this corporate piece in 10bit slog w/custom wb - no color grading. Single quick gamma & exposure adjustment made in ColorSync to the screengrab for fun. Love shooting slog.

Well it is OK but her face is a little grey, the building is a little red etc. Im not imagining that this shot could really work without grading unless you spent an age shooting it.

It would be really interesting if you did some sort of tutorial/blog etc to do this.

Most of the bloggers who describe using Slog.. well their footage is terrible

Up to this point I've mostly used the cine gamma's on my F3. I had a couple of reasons for not using Slog for everything. One was not having monitoring LUTs for slog on my version of this particular camera. The other reason was I found Slog too noisy. But I admit to not understanding Slog exposure properly with my earlier efforts. I recall using Slog twice to date using the internal 8 bit recording to capture exterior scenes with very high dynamic range. It worked out ok on both occasions. I mostly work with lit senarios so I am able to quite easily capture scenes with decent highlight handling and roll off with the cine gamma's. A nice calibrated 17 inch Sony OLED broadcast monitor has also been very useful.

Now with the arrival of the FS7 I'm experimenting with Slog 3 and the onboard MLUTS. I've learned a hell of a lot reading stuff on this forum but there are still gaps in my knowledge. I suppose the confidence to use Cine EI and Slog 3 will come eventually with trial, error and experience. My main gripe with the current workflow in Cine EI mode is that noise reduction in camera is turned off. I have to turn around edits and grades very quickly and NR in post really does slow me down. I may look at shooting in custom mode with Slog 3 selected as a gamma very much like my non paid slog version worked on my F3. I understand that I may not be able to use sgamut3.cine so may mileage with using LUTS in post may vary.

I wonder why you are experimenting.. or rather Sony should have a simple page describing the options. While it is important to know your tools also the manufacturer should provide some sort of guidance.

Funny you mention it, it's something I've kinda wanted to do for a while. I just don't know how to do those screen recordings that people do for video blogs.

You would need first to explain how you expose - eg grey card at 40, or zebras at 98 etc.

You can record your screen in quick time 10 "File->new screen recording" :)

Grug if you do get down to doing this it would serve Slog noobies like me very well. I bet with the uptake of the FS7 many others will benifit too.

I wanna be a real man and and do it all in Cine EI ;)
