PMW350 does not ship with DV

Exactly...Nano Flash and you would get far nicer SD DVD's, superior to down-converting EX footage to SD using your NLE or even expensive cards.

But nano flash shooting in HD (then converting to SD properly) would still give you better results than recording in SD. The point here is if recording and compression is not a limiting factor, the HD=>SD will always give you better results in terms of quality than SD. I'm not sure what the proper term for this effect is, but you can see the same phenomenon with digital stills.

I'm just very picky about picture quality.

As am I. We perfectionists can be a pain in the butt.

Who knows, maybe my picture is even better than the one you are getting!

Who knows, maybe they are.

Sounds like I struck a nerve. That was not my intention. Just sharing some thoughts. Nothing more, nothing less.

Shooting in HD and cutting out all that info by down-converting will never beat a dedicated digibeta cam.

Who said anything about DigiBeta?

no nerves struck here at all. Just responding to original point of the post.

SD isn't dead. Yeah if you got an EX1 a good SD picture can be gained from down - converting but it just wont look as good as using IMX 50 or look as good as a high end DVCAM for SD production

It doesn't take any longer, so there is no lost time (money).

I drop the HD footage into an HD timeline. Edit. Mix. Grade. Render to proper DVD file and it's ready to go.

EDIT:
Just did a little test. It took 55 seconds to convert 1 minute of HD (1920x1080) to SD (720x480).

Well that sounds like a lot more time than just handing shot footage over or rendering SD. For 3 hours of footage, you just added 3 hours or rendering.

A bunch of us did an informal blind test on SD quality from a bunch of cameras, including HD downcoverts from EX1, SD shot in camera on a Z1, SD shot on PD170, HD downconverted in post & downconvert out of camera (shot in HD, logged in SD using cameras downconvert). Pretty much everyone agreed the native SD camera captured the best SD (just, it was near impossible to tell the difference between most, obvious in some though), the HD downconvert quality was pretty much a busted myth.

Fortunately I was wrong about the missing analogue audio out. Its not as simple as a rca on camera for each channel, but there is a 5 pin XLR on the back for audio out. I assume thats a common ground, and a line level signal for each channel.

The obvious problem with this is always having to carry a break out connector & more cables to cause potential problems. Thats going to burn more than a few people... So much room on the camera, especially down the side.

Based on "tests" I've seen, I would strongly disagree. Why? Because, in the beginning, like you, I fought this notion tooth and nail. Since then, I've seen too much footage shot in both SD and HD that was down converted to SD. One of the tests I saw was at a seminar hosted by Sony. The footage was shot by professional camera men. There was no comparison.

Sorry, Guy, the emperor is naked.

It's obvious that neither of us is going to convince the other.

Once more, we'll have to agree to disagree agreeably.

I don't need to convince you, to me, my own SD looks better from HD but it really does appear it depends on the SD camera as well as your downcovert process. Some cameras and downconvert options are much better than others so I wouldn't say its fixed one way or the other.

It also will depend heavily on what MODE you shot the HD in. A downconversion from 720p or 1080p will look much better than a downconversion from 1080i.

I have just shot an SD 4:3 spot at 720p30. I have sone this recurring 2 minute cooking tip spot before using my VX2100(PD170). At this poing, in editing, the HD to SD looks better to my eyes. But I will check again when I have final product to compare to the old way I did it in SD. Granted a PD170 isn't the best camera, but it ain't too shabby either.
