I currently still shoot SD and I'm looking to move up to a new Full HD camera under $10k. Considering the new RED Scarlet camera may not be available until at least 2009, I was wondering if this camera would be worth investing in? I'm looking to shoot primarily documentary and short fiction films. I'm a little worried about storage media. Is there any kind of hard drive attachment? Does the camera hold more than one storage disk? Any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

The EX1 is a very nice HD camera. Revolutionary in some ways. Just be aware of some of it's shortcomings (rolling shutter is something that may or may not affect you depending on what you do with the camera) and make the best decision you can.

In terms of storage, you can buy the SxS cards. You can connect it to a Firestore hard drive recorder *IF* you don't mind doing it at HDV rates instead of the native high quality rates. Sony also makes a small hard drive recorder specifically for the camera that apparently works well. The camera holds 2 cards at a time, and you can remove one while the other is writing if you want, then put it back in after dumping the footage off.

It's not a perfect camera, and it may not be the best camera for you, but it's certainly one worth looking at very seriously.

I was covering the Hawaiian International Billfish tournament last week and was lucky enough to be on the boat that landed a 973-pound marlin. The fight was 2 hrs 16 minutes. I didn't shoot every minute but got all the action that counted. I also covered the rest of the fishing day up to that point.

I had three 16-gig cards and two 8-gig cards. It was enough for the whole day including that epic fight.

As for batteries, I have two BP-60's and one BP 30. I'd be more comfortable with three BP-60's and 4 16-gig cards.

The cards are downloaded at the end of the day so there's no unloading at all in the field. And they're very reliable. Haven't had a single problem since I started shooting with this camera in February.
