PLYWOOD SKATER Finished

Ted,

I think I'd be interested in your mount. A ballmount was gonna be my choice but that might not be too sturdy then. I did like the use of the LCD mount that one guy had.

Cheez,

Great looking footage. What did you shoot it on? Really turned out looking sweet.

Anyone thinking of making of making anykind of height adjustable table for increased shooting options? I think some kind of modular table would be awesome.... Especially for doing model shots as well as eye-level kinds of moves.

Nice job! Let us know what price you'd be able to build on for. Some might be interested in just the pieces cut out (so they can assemble, while others would want a complete assemby). To DIY I am going to have to invest in some new power tools or find someone with a woodshop.

I'll try mounting some old and heavy svhs cams I have in mothball and see if it could.

Justyn

ok, i'll put up an easy diagram for the mount.

I decided to give it another go to , i bought a hole saw for the two sizes and now it came out perfect. I could probably build them for like $125 for people.

I'm currently working on doing my own skater dolly (though I'm doing mine in metal - not wood) and I've been looking into possibly producing them and selling them for under $500-$700, but found out that P+S Technik who does the Skater Mini have patented the design concept ... Bummer ... So you might want to reconsider this before you start making them to sell and risk getting into trouble ;-)

If they decided to sell the Skater Mini for $1000 I'd surely buy one, but $4500-5000 is waaaay outta my league.

Good point on the copyright and selling them.. however, small modifications to the design would make it something new... and it's hard for any company to license and patent skate wheels. I'm sure ya'd have to use a different name than Skater, but it would be crazy for anyone to get sued, if it's kept small enough. I also think that people reverse engineer stuff all the time. Microsoft has been doing it for years and years.

Anyone get exact measurements, bolt sizes and hardware info? I"m going to be making mine this week and I have a tendency to overbuy crap and have all this loose hardware at the end. Any and all info is appreciated. I'm going to pick up the knobs and such from Ace hardware and the wood and screws and such from Lowe's. Is it just me, or are the people at Home Depot big jerks? I hate that service there. Almost as bad as the people at BestBuy.... now they take the cake for pricks of the year..... Just my .02

ya, i overbought too. the bolts/screws for the axles are 5/16". the screws to bolt the wheel assemblies together can be whatever you want really. i used whatever the next size down from 1/4" is. 3/16" maybe? i didn't install the wheel locks. my wheel thingys are so tight i don't think i need them. they stay put.

thanks for the tips and the great footage. The shot of the ceiling was my favorite. Great stuff.

Actually a patent only really protects you if somebody makes a product just like you. If it's altered a lot there's not much that could be done. They could threaten to sue, but it probably wouldn't hold up. I think you could even, in theory, apply for a patent on this version if it's made a certain number of changes over the P+S one. Now, I'm no patent lawyer, but I've been researching this kind of thing for a while.

I'm currently looking into the costs and feasibility of making them from anodized, maybe powder coated aluminum. My brother in law (an expert craftsman) works in a fabricating shop and is rather keen to take on the project.

So far the designs are very similar to most seen in this forum but with a few evolving changes to accommodate the tighter tolerances (better machining) that aluminum will afford. They'll be very strong/durable.

Not exactly looking to "go into business" with this idea but by his own admission - the unit costs should get cheaper the more he makes once the jigs are set up.

I'll post details as they become available.

that sound promising. Please, keep us posted.

ya, just look at any new product that comes out. no matter how unique it is, ebay has the knockoffs like the next day. i think it can be done legally.

put a motor on it and make it remote controlled. chase the cat around the house with it. all the stuff you need is available at your local r/c hobby shop. that would be a significant design improvement huh?

I like that idea...I'll test on my cat. :)

Remote controlled would be nice... Especially with chains or gears or something so that it could be more of a motion control setup.

Anyone thouhgt of doing this on a track or somesuch method for making repeatable moves.?

Yes, what?

Dan - are you aware that your site has many broken images, dead links and pages that say "Comming Soon"?

I know you're making some really great products and I understand why people are giving you a lot of respect for your work in the film industry, but your site is really not looking very professional considering the steep price-tag on the products you're selling ...

Just an advice - clean up the site or hire someone to do it for you. The old site looks much better in my opinion

Respect,

Tony
