Pluging DVX into soundboard

hello

i am plugging into a soundboard today and I wantto make sure i have the my camera at the right settings.

If iam getting a line feed and want 2 channels of audio should i have the xlr cord in input2 set ch 1 & 2 to chan 2 and have it set to line feed?

thanks

Yes. Make sure Phantom power is off. I don't know that this is an issue when set to line, but it can't hurt to be sure. I have had WONDERFULL results with the DVX coming from a boad mix. We use the Aux stereo output from the board (usually use a ¼" adapter to XLR) and the sound is great. If you can get an XLR line output, that's even better.

Ive been very lucky that the guys who run the boards I have worked with are very good at what they do. The results have been awesome.

Good luck.

no, boweevil thats the wrong setting. left output on desk to input 1 on dvx. set it to INPUT 1. right output on desk to input 2 on dvx, set it to INPUT 2.

naturally, in order to record two channels of audio, you are going to need two cables...

can somebody clarify the difference in opinion here?

can you record two channels of audio through one line from the soundboard into input two by having both channel 1 and channel 2 set to input 2?

im filming a show tonight and I'd love to get an answer asap is somebody knows?

if you can't do this, does it make a difference if you have the line into input 1 or input 2, and does it in fact matter if your "mic power"s are on or off?

thanks.

Both ways mentioned above are correct.

Plugging one line into In2 and then routing it to both channels will give you 2 chanels of the same sound - so mono.

Pluggin 2 lines from the board to the 2 inputs independantly will give you a 2-channel (stereo) mix.

In both cases you will of course want the inputs set in "line" mode with phantom power "off"

Right. Each XLR input gives you 1 channel of audio. You can choose to record that 1 channel to two channels on the tape (as in your original post), but that will give you two identical mono tracks. For stereo, you need two separate signals coming into the camera, one to each XLR, and you need to record them to separate channels.

If you are unable to set your levels perfectly in advance, you can give yourself a safety marging by recording the same sound with two different gain levels.... if you get peaks on one, you can use the other. Also, fr monitoring, if you're only recording one channel, it's still nice to hear it in both ears.

wow, thank you! i can't for life of me believe that these things didnt occur to me!

both of your reasons for recording both channels (having a backup gain and hearing in both ears) will be a huge help.

thanks so much for the fast reply!

Wow that's some good advice.

No you ca not record two channels of audio with one cable. Well you can but that would either be a specialised stereo cable with two connectors at each end or a digital signal. But for what you are asking NO.

The reason you might want to record both channels is if they are sending you a stereo mix. In that case you may end up missing something if you only take one channel. Often PA's are outputing a mono signal but you need to ask.
