Ok guys, please don't
be mad about asking this but
I need to know something about the Panasonic AG-DVC30,
and there's little info out there, so I thought all of you DVX100A
tech masters, (Barry?), might know the answer.

They say you can shoot in total darkness with the AG-DVC30,
and extend the range of what you shoot with the add-on IR
light.

My question is...to shoot in the IR b&w mode, does it automatically
select a slow shutter speed, or does it work like Sony's green night vision, making eyes look like demon eyes and everything bathed in green, yet not changing the shutter speed so you get a stable green
image in total darkness?

In other words, does the AG-DVC30 shoot footage just like Sony's night shot, only in b&w, not green?

Thanks so much!

I would assume that it is able to shoot in the IR mode without defaulting to a slow shutter since it says that you can shoot in IR mode and choose to also use it with slow shutter or just as slow shutter alone. ---page 6 of users manual:

Super Nighttime Shooting:

The built-in infrared lamp makes it possible to shoot
in the dark. You can also select the Super IR
(infrared) mode with slow shutter or the Color NS
mode, which uses slow shutter only.

but the wording could just be weird.. best to hear it from someone who owns one and would know for sure (if they know what they are talking about).

I was made to believe that it works just like Sony's Night Shot, but in B&W. You'll get the same glowing eyes. For a lot of the applications they are marketing this cam for (surveillance, etc.) slow shutter would render the cam useless.

Thanks so much you guys!!!

Does anyone here actually own it,
and know for sure?

I have played around with it and it is awesome. When you first turn on the IR mode you can see in total darkeness, really well, for a few feet in front of you, if there is absolutley no light. You can see even better by turing up the gain (which is really clean), and you can see even better by reducing the shutter, and then you can see even better by adding on the optional infared light. I am not sure if you see the 'wierd eyes' in the dark, but it may be interent to all IR shooting.

For the most part it is a great cam for survielience.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Christopher!

That all sounds good...so are you saying that you can still see a few feet in front of you, in no light, with a low level of grain...even at normal shutter speeds? Does it automatically drop the shutter speed?

Re: Pleaz dnt gtt mad! Q abt Panasonic AG-DVC30...

NO,

You can see a few feet in front of you with no grain and normal shutter speeds, that is why it is so great- I think in a complete dark 15x20 foot room you can see in perfect clarity, but in black in white.

A great cam! In fact it would be my second choice to my DVX.

To be completely honest, you can do this very same thing with any video camera. All you need is an infrared light source. The video camera itself naturally picks up the near infrared. You can test this by connecting your DVX to a TV and watch the screen while you point a remote control into the lens and press the buttons. You will see some sporadic white flashes.
