Thank you David!! This is the only board I trust concerning the DVX and so many users here seem to be so happy with the product. I don't know what person in what universe told my friend this, but I have now something to tell him.
Slander- Oral communication of false statements injurious to a person's (or company's) reputation.
That is so patently ridiculous as to be actual libel.
If it's considered libel on the board, I would say it's slander when spoken. That's why I underlined says. That's just me though.
When I posted that I was playing that Spider-Man scene in my head:
Peter: You can't lie about Spider-Man like that, it's slander.
Jameson: I resent that... Slander is spoken. If it's written it's libel.
Parsfox, if what your friend said was true, then I'm sure this board would be chalk full of "horror stories" concerning the dvx heads. As you may have already viewed, the vast majority of people who post here have had positive experiences with the dvx. Some of them you'd probably have to kill, in order to pry the dvx from their hands. ;D
well, if you do professional work with a cam you sould get it checked every now and then.
we have our Betacams checked yearly. you don´t wanna charge 1500 for the day and then have bad image due to dirty heads. it depends on how many hours you get on the heads and what you do with it.
this is the same for SONY, CANON or any cam. if you use it for your own purpose and can redo stuff in the worst case, fine. but if you charge money for your work make sure the equipment is topnotch.
I'm on the same page as everyone here, but I have a question. How much are new heads? Are there enough hours in the day to burn through a set of heads in the course of a year? Like say this guy decided to use his DVX as a security camera, and insisited on taping everything. Could he, technically, be right?
Of course, this wouldn't make the DVX different from any other camera (with tape heads) on the planet, but I'm bored and feel like playing the moron's advocate.
It's probably true, just incomplete or taken out of context.
Like: "There has to be yearly work done on it that costs about $700 a year...
... if you clean your camera's heads with a wire scrub brush, like I do."
You don't need to tell your friend anything. But you need to stop listening to camera advise coming from him.
As fot the theory of using the camera as a security device - the cost of the tapes will dwarf any camera maintenance bill.

My original DVX is coming up on its 2 year birthday, and havnt had it serviced yet, I have broken the Firewire port pin but it was my fault... thats it... and I have Hundreds of hours on the heads and it still is going strong. I also use another DVX about the same age that has been used as a half ass Emo crash cam, it has been hit and dropped and thrown 10 feet (onto dirt).. and the only thing that it has broken is the mattebox.
The DVX has incredibly robust hardware components and the "Man that stupid ___ broke" comments are few and far between. Stuff that goes wrong usually happens within the first week of use, when its broken from birth.
