I'd actually like Plan A. This site has grown past being solely for DVX films. I think that creating a bunch of different sections for films will just split up the feedback. As long as people identify their camera when posting it will make things all good.
Barry, you have a point about starting too many forums, especially if no one posts in them. I wonder what the big deal is with people identifying their camera? Perhaps some are trying to pass off their PD150 as a DVX, maybe others are forgetful, or just don't read the stickies.
Isaac is right, the forum has grown beyond the original "show what the DVX can do" to "tell us a story with your camera." What's the answer? The screen grabs and clips section is too busy and unfocused.
I say Plan B is a good place to start, but getting people to label their footage according to camera model is, I'm afraid, going to be like getting them to change the location in their user cp. It's going to take a lot of effort.
kudos to Barry, for always trying to make things better! Speaking of which, an FAQ would be great. Yet another fellow recently fell prey to the grey market scammers; it would be nice to get a general warning out there.
Ok, give me a day to digest everyone's comments and come up with a workable solution that attempts to meets most of your concerns. Now is the time to post and discuss before the changes get implemented.
Frizzle--I used to have a FAQ posted in the Marketplace, but it got destickified when we upgraded the board--I'll try and find it again.
As a bit of an outsider (can you be a moderator AND an outsider?) I find the growing pains interesting. Seems to me that this site is moving from a site dedicated to a particular camera and its operation to one about filmmaking. Folks like Isaac embrace that change, folks like Raptor are upset by it. What's best is really dependent on what you want the site to be...
You can look at this site as just for the dvx, or you can acknowledge that the site has grown beyond the dvx and encompasses not only other cameras but knowledge that goes beyond the dvx. How relevent would a section dedicated to the DVX be in a years time? Two years time? This site started out being about the dvx, but it grew into a community. Expanding this section won't disrupt the community, it'll just expand it. Just in the past few days the volume and variety of work has been pretty interesting.
um, no, the point of having a dvx site is to have a site for the dvx...it's self-explanatory...otherwise it's just a.....movie site...moreover, what I can't figure out is why anyone would go out of their way to post non-dvx footage on a dvx site anyway, what's the point of that and what where they hoping to get out of it? I mean why would I waste my time to hunt down a XL2 website and relentlessly post DVX footage there? Yeah, sometimes it *is* what it is, and this is a DVX site, that's why I come here, why else would I? you can lump the non-dvx stuff in their own section here, that's fine but everytime I click on a thread and it's, "ok so this is not on a dvx, but...." I'm like geezus, wasting my time again. I'm here to learn how to optimize my dvx usage, that's the only reason for this site...otherwise spin this site off and just call it CAMuser or something. And in a year's time? Ok, panny will have another model out, so the site doesn't outgrow it's purpose afterall. Just keep things neat and logical. We all bought the dvx for a reason, same reason we're here...
and no, I'm not expecting any change from those two cents
I'm kinda torn between the general growth of the site and keeping it sort of restricted to its namesake camera, but we're going to have the same problem come back when the luckier ones get their hands on the HVX ...
That said, I don't wish to see this forum turn into something like DVInfo.net. I've given up on some threads there that had promise, but wound up being dozens of ridiculous, noise-filled pages each. My favorite part about this site is that it always manages to stay relevant, informative, inspiring, and entertaining. Whatever keeps it that way works for me.
