I shot this video is a huge cathedral. Even though the mininster was mic'd and close by, there is still a large degree of echo and hiss. Unfortunately, I did the shoot the week before I got my Juiced Link Preamp.

I'm not too concerned about the echo, but anyway to remove this hiss?

I am using Premiere Pro but I'm definitely weak in the areas of audio correction. Any suggestions on miminzing this hiss using Premiere? I don't want to download a seperate plugin or software. I have CS6.

Thank you!

First, nice shots and edit!

Ya, the sound is pretty rough. What mic and recorder? Or straight into camera?

Did you link to Audition and do some noise removal?

Looks pretty good. You can do noise reduction on it in Audition as suggested. Do you have audio for some of the other stuff, room tone? I guess some of it is street noise, voices. Going from the music directly to that audio makes for abrupt transitions. So if you can get some of the hiss out, then cross fade with some of the ambient sound on some of those other clips, lightly under that music, it might help.

I was using the Senheisser g3 series right into the cam. I have had this issue before, but I am usually not in such a large cathedral where the minister was so far away and the room was so large!

i actually don't have audition :( Is this a good program?

Yes, it links dynamically with Premiere. I'm using the Creative Cloud and love the functionality. Do you have an older version of Premiere or the Creative Suite? The older Soundbooth had similar functionality.

There are free programs to clean up the audio like Audacity, but I've never used them on audio that's tied to a video file. And now, with all of the edit's done, it would be difficult to do, as you'd have to replace the audio bits individually most likely. (Unless there's another way that I'm not familiar with).

I also do my noise reduction, equalization, compression and other audio things before I start the main edit.

*** And the idea about always capturing a minute or two of ambient noise is excellent advice.

Thanks for your help guys. I will put up some clean audio to try to pull out the hiss. Because of the deadline, I dropped the audio with the hiss and replaced it with a new edit.

I'm trying to find a standalone copy of Audition CS6 for Mac b/c I don't want to join the Cloud and pay a monthly fee when my CS6 platform works great as-is.

Ya the audio isn't that bad. I think your having trouble when you up the volume level on the bride and groom since they weren't mic'ed. The echo will be hard to remove, but I'll give it a shot.

In the editors video, how much did you increase the volume by in premiere?

right, it sounds like ambient sound and the noise floor... I would obfuscate it by bringing in some of the room tone/ambience in the clips under the music, otherwise it's ADR time.

Woof. I'm definitely no audio pro, but that's some difficult noise to remove. The echo of the priest runs into the beginning of the bride/groom talking in most spots. To get the bride/groom level to match the priest, I had to crank it 15-25db, which amplifies the noise to such a great degree, it's beyond my capabilities. The vocal leveler and ADR didn't seem to be all that helpful either.

I was surprised the lav. on the G3 brought in so much room noise. I don't have any experience in a room like that.

You might get more focused help from an audio editing specific form, here on DVX or elsewhere: http://www.soundonsound.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?Cat=&C=2#2

But, without a pro editing program, perhaps Audacity and this forum would be your best bet? http://forum.audacityteam.org/

Post back with what you figure out, and with the final edit.

I'm confused. Is this the noisy clip or after it is cleaned up? Because given where this was recorded, I thought the sound was fine.

I am confused too. Have you replaced the clip with a cleaned up version because apart from the B&G being a little quiet I would be perfectly happy with this audio. The priest has a good rich voice that sounds fine.

My trick to fix audio like this in Premiere Pro is to level out the difference in volume levels between B&G & priest by normalising the audio gain & then using the Compressor in the Dynamics audio plugin. Use a ratio of 2-4 & MakeUp of 6-12dB I tend to use 2&6dB or 3&9dB or 4&12dB. Here's basic tutorial on CS5 but it's the same for CS6 & CC http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aF5ikJBsDo4

good point guys.
yes, I increased the audio levels so we could hear the vows over the music. I let premiere boost the audio so that the max level was 0 dab and then I decreased the music track as low as possible.
