Please help with shotgun mic setup

I'm filming this Sunday with a shotgun mic and wanted to know if anyone could give me advice on setting it up. I saw some responses saying that I should have both channels going through the shotgun mic with one level set slightly lower than the other. Would you recommend using the onboard mic as the secondary mic (setting one channel for the onboard and the other for the shotgun)? Or is it best to only use the shotgun? Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated (any links as well). Thanks

The on board does you no good. Ever.

Plug in to Input 2, set both channels to that input, then you can have two different volumes for unexpected pops. I never did that since my DVX only had Input 1 working, it's fine to just use one channel if that's what you prefer.

Thanks Cassius. On the front of the camera where it has the switches for input 1 and input 2, if I plug the shotgun mic into input 2, do I put the switch to Line or Mic?
