I have looked everywhere and no place has given me the answer.
heres the deal, I have a project im working on and have been working on for months and have never had ANY problems with footage not rendering. Now out of the blue my intro clips wont render.. The ones that I just leave be will play just fine but if i go to add an effect then it wont render. I got an error that said "Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corresponding hardware card" I have no idea what that means and don't know what to do. I admit I am not the most fcp savy person on the planet and maybe I am missing something little but im stuck and have a deadline so please any help is much appreciated!

What codec are you using for your project? There are some codecs (like Redcode) that you can read in FCP, but can't be rendered. If you want to try something quick, go to Sequence>Settings. Click the render control tab and in the render box where it says codec, change it or Apple Pro Res instead of same as sequence codec.

thank you for the response but I kind of feel dumb because there is no box that says codec? it just says render and playback with some checked boxes and render with a frame rate and resolution box.. im in final cut 5 if that makes a difference

Ah, that feature wasn't in FCP 5...

The footage that im having problems with was captured in Imovie which I suspect to be the culprit. The reason I captured there was becasue the footage was HD and I couldn't for the life of me get final cut to capture it right.. The project is kind of a strange one.. the intro was shot in hd 16:9 and the rest of the video is in sd 4:3. I didn't really mess with the settings too much because I didn't really know what to do but heres the general settings
720x480 NTSC DV (3:2)
Pixel Aspect ratio NTSC - CCIR 601 / DV 720x480
29.97 fps

There were various cameras used although the one that shot the footage I'm having problems with was a cannon xh-a1 but only the HD shots.. the standard sd footage I shot with it has no problem at all..

Not sure if this helps, but I saw that exact same error playing around with some SD footage for the first time last night (I usually edit HD). The file was an 854x480 ProRes file, and my projects normally initialize to 1080p HD. I dropped the clip on and FCP asked if I wanted to use its settings for the project. After that it played fine, except when I'd add a transition; then the render bar would go red, and attempting to render would result in the "Codec not found".

I discovered through some research online for this error that some people were solving this by changing from 10-bit to 8-bit video in Sequence Settings. I tried this, and sure enough, I could now render.

I didn't really care about the loss in color space, but this was a throw-away project. If it were something I had to grade I'd be peeved. I'd love to know exactly what happened, if anyone else has any ideas. Again, I'm not even sure this is the same issue, but perhaps the OP can try this option at least to continue working.

Thank you for the suggestion, I went to try and realized it was already in 8-bit and the 10-bit wasn't even available. I then tried the other options like render in RGB and nothing worked. I thought it was about to because it STARTED to render instead of the render box flashing on the screen really fast but then it just ended with the "codec not found" error again. I didn't delete or update anything on my computer so I dont understand how these clips worked before and now they dont?
