What would you do to these?

I just did a small amount of brightness/contrast and color curves in vegas...

Do I even really need to do that to the second one? What would you do to it?

Grade them so the blacks hit 0 ire.. use your scopes. You want a full range of tones so the picture pops. The lighting is flat, without some interesting shadows, so takes so blurry shapes created in photoshaop and lay them over the image using multiplication mode, that will add some shadow. Try to frame the part of the picture that you want the viewer to concentrate on.

I took the image, added some blurry black shapes to get rid of the contrast area around his neck. (the whites of the wall hitting the black of the leather sofa..) basically you want to see this guys face and focus on that.. your eyes goes to the highest contrast area, so you have the keep the contrast on his face and nowhere else.
Then I blurred the background a bit selectively, and added some light-patterning made from a blurred image of venetian blinds. This helps to excite the bg in a subtle way.
Then, I re-framed the guy from being in the middle to put him a little to the side, this uses the negative space around the figure in a little more meaningful way.
This guy seems to be decent looking, but yu've shot him so we see all the fat under his chin, which is not flattering to the subject, it makes him look fat and lazy and kind of dumb. When you're shooting, get him to point his chin down a bit so the camera sees his jawline better. He'll look stronger and more interesting.
I know my 're-touch' is not fantastic, but you can sort of get the idea, right?
You just need to pick up some tricks that every cinematographer uses when shooting a subject like this: angle of face, background pattern, contrast to draw the eye to the subject, etc.
Study good portrait photos and you'll get the idea...

Thank you so much for the help! Could you explain how you did the venetian blinds effect on the background? Did you do that in photoshop or in Vegas?
