Please help me choose the Editor.

Hello Friends,

Finally I have the GH1 with me and now I'm looking for the editing software to edit the footage. My first choice was Vegas and when I downloaded the demo and tried to install it I came to know that it requires .NET installed on the computer.

I'm pretty wary about installing .NET on my main DAW(digital audio workstation) as for first thing it is not connected to the Internet(I've read about the offline installation but they are conflicting views about how it installs) and second I'm not sure what kind of performance degradation it will cause by having the extra services running in the background(This machine is fully optimized for Digital Audio Workstation with minimum of the services running in the background).

I'm basically looking for an editor that can help me edit to cuts and do other basic transitions + text. It should be able to handle 50P slow motion and can edit both 1080 25P and 720P. If it can handle AVCHD directly it will be great, else I will not mind transcoding.

I've previously used Power Director 3.0(very fast and efficient) but it only does SD video. If someone has used Power Director for HD please do let me know your views about it as how it handles the above mentioned footage.

Please also give your views about Edius NEO, Nero, Adobe Premier Elements and other software in this price range.

I will be happy getting Power Director if it can handle the 50P footage with ability to do slow motion.

I'm new to video editing but it became clear that PowerDirector and Vegas were the two top contenders. I tried both and finally setteled for Vegas. Since I am a total amateur I opted for Begas Movie Studio Premium (pr is it Platinum?) This is the one that supports AVCHD files directly, and it costs $85.00

PowerDirector seems to have very similar capabilities to Vegas and it definitely renders faster. But, compared to Vegas, the user interface seemed very amateurish to me.

I understand your concern about the .Net stuff. In my case that wasn't an issue since I already had it all installed because of other Microsoft software I have. I do believe there can be problems with Vegas and proper versions of some of the .Net software, in particular the Visual C++ runtime library. Frankly I wouldn't be concerned about the performance hit it .Net stuff adds. I don;t think it makes any started tasks active on its own.

My system is an i7/6GB with 2 SATA hard drives and dual monitors and runs Vista-64. My sense is you'll need this level of system to do efficient video rendering, but I really have no basis for comparison.

Bottom line: do your own evaluation of Vegas & the latest PowerDirector. They both handle AVCHD files directly from the GH1. Then just pick the one you like best. They both offer free 40 day trials.
 
Thanks, I guess I'll have to install Power Director and check it out...

Was just wondering if someone has used it and knows if Power Director can deal with 50P and do slow motion.
