We shot on the DVX-100A, 24FPS widescreen. We used the camera to download the footage but it was stolen and we got the HVX-200 for replacement. Now when we input the footage we are not sure what to set the log and capture settings at in order to get widescreen 24FPS. If anyone can help walk us through the proper set up it would be greatly appreciated.

We shot the footage in the DVX-100A on the F6 Setting 16:9. In FCP5, which we are using for editing, the footage captured on Anamorphic does not fill the safe bars and there is black screen at the top and bottom. When setting are changed to default DV-NTSC the footage fills the top and bottom of the wireframes but the picture looks stretched. Again if someone can guide us in the right direction on what the settings should be it would be greatly appreciated. I hope this is enough info, but please let me know if you need more.

Oh you should really, really consider looking at either Noah K's DVD set or Barry Green's book and/or DVD set. Noah's DVD is for the Panasonic DVX, but the fundamentals carry over to the HVX. Barry has however actually produced a book and DVD for the HVX. They are:

Noah / DVX DVD - 24 Digital Post Production with Final Cut Pro and the DVX100

Barry Green / DVX Book + DVD - The DVD DVD and THE DVD Book

Barry Green / HVX Book - The HVX Book

Barry Green w/ Noah (& Others) / HVX DVD - The HVX BootCamp DVD Volumes I and II

But specifically to your situation right now. What are you shooting with for the HVX? Are you shooting to its internal tape? Are you shooting to P2 Cards/Firestore? That would be something you need to identify first to figure out which FCP settings to use.

As for your question earlier about the "black bars" (this is called letter boxing), they should be there for standard definition (SD) footage. If you shoot 16x9 in SD, you are squeezing (hence camera modes called Squeeze modes) 854 pixels into a frame that is actually only 720 pixels wide. What you record to tape is actually 720 pixels. Anytime you play it back on a 4x3 TV, monitor, etc., it is only going to play back 720 pixels wide. So how do you get it to not look squeezed then? You stretch it out to 854 pixels and then scale that down (not squeeze) to fit 720 pixels. During that process you end up with the letter boxing. But it preserves your entire image and gives it the correct aspect ratio.

But don't worry, FCP knows how to handle that stuff. Once you get it all sorted out the project you work with will be able to play back just about anyway you want. Whether it be full screen 16x9, letterbox 4x3, or pan-n-scan 4x3, all will be viable options for you when you're ready to finish.

cheers.

More info is needed. What format on the HVX are you shooting in. HD, SD? 720p, 24fps native...etc. etc.

I just did some research on the best way to fit 4:3 into a 16:9 sequence. I am using the HVX right now in SD with the squeeze mode, and I need to edit in some 4:3 footage I shot with another cam earlier. I think you are having problems, because the DVX doesn't shoot in "true" 16:9, and the HVX does.

Here is what I did.
Created a 4:3 "anamorphic" sequence since it will go out to dvd flagged 16:9
Brought in my 4:3 clips
Opened up the motion tab on the clip
In basic motion scaled the image up to 136
Adjust center up or down to reveal best composition of the frame
then down in Distort set the aspect ratio slider to 33

you may want to slide the aspect ratio slider first.
