Please Help-DVD project

I feel as though I am missing something and can't quite figure it out. I have a project on DVD that I need to get out. Let me explain my workflow, and tell me why I am not getting as clean an image as I have seen so many other DVX users get.
From Avid Xpress DV I export my sequence as a QT reference file. I use the Sorenson squeeze 3 lite version that came with bundled w/ Avid (therefore I can't play w/ settings). I drag my QT reference file into DVD_LARGE_NTSC to encode to MPEG-2. I take the output .mpv file that is created and drag that into Ulead DVD Workshop2. From there I author my DVD. The output looks pretty good. But nowhere near some of the beautiful video I have seen from others on DVD, and nowhere near what it looks like when I plug my camera directly into the TV. I have looked into Sorenson Squeeze 4 Compression Suite. Will this give me better quality than the 3 lite version? What is my solution? Thank you so much in advance for anyone w/ some great insight!!!!!

Re: Please Help-DVD project

For me Tmpgenc works fine.
Takes a lot of times but the results worth the wait.
I use Qt ref too.
Try other workflows. Like another dvd autor aplicattion. If your output compression is good your dvd have to be like that.
Anyway It takes a lot of time and headache to figure out the best way to go dvd. I try a lot of things before i decided tmpeg with qt ref (and i use encore to author it, by the way)

Happy editing (and authoring)

Re: Please Help-DVD project

if you have the loot, I use Discreet cleaner.. it gives me a nice compression. after that I goto DVD-LAB and work from it there.. gives me a good output..

what you can do is look in the settings, of the dvd output template, and check the BIT RATE..

If the bit rate is too low, the quality is low.. the max bitrate is 8000, and that is good for the good good good dvd players.. the crappy ones probably cant read something that high. Play around with it. it will take a while to get it right.

I would say export it out of avid.. and go to another program. Usually the best quality stuff is going through massive amounts of programs.. There's no getting around that.

Software encoders will vary from program to program, there is not "just one way to do it" thus the variety of programs on the market. SOme are better with color space, otheres wih de-interlacing, etc.

Not haivng control over the parameters of the encoder is probably your issue. Usually intro packages or comsumer level products give you presets in order to fullfill the "ease of use" criteria, but do so at the sacrifice of quality control. At that point you are entering into the prosumer/professional space and therefore the need for more controls is needed.

I use the full version of Sorenson Squeeze for my work. It has all the comtrols I need to encode prgressive 24p with 16:9 flags etc. Sorenson uses Main Concept's MPEG2 encoder. You can certainl try other encoders but without trial versions, can become a bit expensive.

But in any case, you need an encoder with more control be it Sorenson or anyone else.
