please explain over & under cranking

Im somewhat fazed by the manual's instructions for 'cranking.

Can someone explain what to do - I would like to record a bouncing ball and see it played back in slow motion and then in fast motion on the LCD. Whenever I try this it just seems to play back at normal speed. Loosing a few brain cells on how to figure this out :(

your help will be appreciated

You camera plays back at 24 or 30 frames per second. Thus, if you change the framerate to something else, it'll affect the speed. If you're recording setup is 24p (24 frames a second) but you set your frame rate to 48, it'll record twice as many frames and thus will be half speed in play back (slow motion). If you only record 12 fps then it'll make everthing go twice as fast. This is exactly how over and under-cranking works in a film camera.

Are you shooting in 24pN? That's the only mode in which you can view real-time variable speed in camera; otherwise, if you're shooting at normal 24p or 60i, you'll see them play back at normal speed unless you convert the frame rate in FCP.

You wouldn't. You'd record at 12 frames, but play back at 25. When you select 25pN mode, that's specifying a playback rate of 25 fps. You can then go in and change your acquisition rate (in the scene file->frame rate menu) so that you acquire at 12 fps and play back at 25fps (2:1 fast motion) or acquire at 50fps and play back at 25fps (2:1 slow motion) or nearly a dozen steps inbetween.
