Please clarify the advice " AE LOCK"

In one the of "recommended" settings threads it said this,

"Set the AE lock button to AE only, not AE + AF, and then do most of your shooting with AE lock set"

I see in the menu where to set AE to AE only - but I do not understand the whole phrase above. In the menu under the AF/AE LOCK line there is also an AF/AE LOCK HOLD which is off on mine.

My camera is set to fully manual for video. So am I correctly setup? I assume AE means "auto exposure" and that will keep my exposure stable throughout the shot? Please advise.

Hi Mike,

The AE button on a DSLR can be configured to obtain an Auto Exposition or AE and Auto Focus and as long as you press it, it's changing the parameters. It´s just advising to use it just as auto exposition as AE AF would mess the focus too and just click it once until you need it again; not keep pressing it.

Hope it helps!

In gh2, using "all manual" mode ae/af lock is useless, is only for automatic modes for example all manual but autofocus, you auto focus where you like and press ae/af lock, as you have manaul exposure it wont lock the exposure but will lock the focus, do that only before recording, while recording the ae/af lock button is useless too, but you can unlock it for example touching the screen and serching for other focus point. And configure af/ae lock hold to ON.
Best regards.
Jesus.
