I am fully aware of how many people post reels on here -- some good, some not so much. I assure you I have read through most of their threads, and done my best to internalize the insights you gave them, but I would love some specific feedback on my own reel. It's less than two minutes long, and I would genuinely appreciate anyone's honest feedback. Thank you very much!

Good for you, man.

How long have you been shooting?

Do you have any examples of footage with a really complex lighting setup?

Thanks!

thanks a lot for taking a look. I've been shooting seriously for one to two years. I don't think I have any footage with any more complex lighting setups than what's there...only recently have I started working with more professional quality lighting, if that's any excuse. thanks again for your comment

looks pretty god, i might suggest you tone it down just a bit on the outside shots, some of them are nothing special really, and they take away from the exterior shots that are really great.

that and i might lose the last shot where the guy buzzes a bit out of focus.

otherwise looks fantastic!

Hey man not too bad, I enjoyed it !

But agreed that some of the shots are really nothing special. But you are who you are if you shot for only 2 yrs.

I suggest you to trim the whole thing down a little bit more, maybe to 1min or so... until you have some more complicated lighting set up footage to put it

into the reel.

Hey! It wasn't bad, but it wasn't that special either. Try to edit it in a quicker flow and leave in ONLY your very best shots. As said before, some of the shots are really not that special. Keep up the good work!

thank you all for your thoughts. I think I will try to cut out some of what you think doesn't stand out so much. What do you believe are the best/most worthwhile shots, and what most needs to be cut out?

Pretty good, sir.

I would like to see a little more variety, though. It felt like it was pulling from maybe three pieces tops. The characters repeated a lot, and maybe that's why I was thinking that.

Also, try to find a middle ground for the coloring. There were a couple of jumps from orangey coloring to a washed out blue and it was a bit jarring.

There were several shots I'd just leave on the cutting room e-floor... the guy looking sick,drunk,poisoned,stoned... mouth hanging open... lose it.

There's a shot, where the camera is shifting to the right, one sees a couple in the background, guy has a guitar... then a bunch of clutter from the blurry foreground chair... I would have cut the
sequence before the chair came into the frame.

Some of the shots that looked like they were shot with ordinary tungsten, looked 'soft'.
Some of the window shots had quite a bit of flair. A problem with windows in a shot.
Girl rises from a dining room table... in 'pro' shots often the camera will come up as the actor/actress rises, and so one is not left with a butt shot. Not that I mind female butt shots in most cases...

Some of the shots that have 'architectural' features, needed to be a bit more aligned. Hallway shot at 1:12, gives me the feeling of being 'canted' in some way. Since this shot may be in the context of some 'story line', there may be 'good' reason for the offbalance feeling... on the other hand, it could be just because the camera set up is slightly off. One can see the slight angle of the camera to the parallel lines in the shot
by looking how the floor matches side to side, how the light panel on the ceiling is a 'little off', etc.

Thanks a lot for the thorough review, very much appreciated. Hawk -- its actually pulling from 7 projects -- but you're right, there's so much character overlap that it seems like far fewer. Anyone else willing to chime in?
