Playing with the scene settings, have a question

I did some tests today where I adjusted everything, chroma phase, vdetail, and all that stuff but I couldn't really tell a difference, I guess my eyes are dumb and need further honing in this area.

Is there a general consensus that the HMC default is it too cranked up in one area and not enough in another area. Or is it more like, everybody has their own unique taste, go find your own, type of thing.

I am wondering the same thing... I also have a Panny HMC150 DVD that has some extra screen files on it, anyone use those?

This is something I was going to put barry's book to use on :)

I prefer to just keep the default scene setting to be honest...The most important thing in my opinion is grabbing the cleanest picture as possible. Any editing program can apply effects and adjust levels to meet your particular taste.

I do however have a scene file created with +2 detail, +1 vdetail, +2 coring, +1 chroma with HD NORM gamma. The adjustments are slight, but you don't want to paint yourself into a corner by applying settings you cant change later. Adjust the master ped to -10 and you will see a difference. I like capturing with a negative ped for the crushed blacks look. But again, you can do that in post.

Film the same scene with each of the six scene files -- and if you don't see a difference -- you need to find another business.

Also, view your footage on a monitor. If you're trying to see differences on the awful on-camera screen -- that may be the problem.

The "HMC150 Scene File Handbook" you can download from the Panasonic "PASS" web site is immensely helpful.

For the ultimate easy answer -- do this -- F3 "Spark" -- reduce the Chroma Level (not "Chroma Phase") by one or two (the default is "+4" -- so bring it down to +3 or +2).

Exactly like the HVX -- the auto/default settings are completely underwhelming. Exactly like the HVX -- if you properly exploit the scene files and camera settings -- the results will infuriate people who spent sixty thousand dollars on their camera.

Good luck!
