Playing 4K/UHD Videos with Windows 7 WMP?

My main editing system is on Windows 7. I have the option to install Windows 10 for free but.....I'm a "If it isn't broken, don't fix it" person. That said, Windows Media Player will not play DVX200 4K/UHD files. Not a huge deal, more of an inconvenience.

Does anyone have a solution?

Thanks.

Have you tried QuickTime for playing 4K? I believe that some of the 4K stuff that I exported played via QuickTime on my Mac. You may also want to try VLC.

Larry, I would use VLC, it's a very robust player on the Win 7 Pro OS, it plays 4K fine, comes with a rich content of playback codecs. I use it all the time, nothing against QT, However, be aware that Apple is no longer supporting QT on the windows platform. It's really PO'ed a lot of vendors, especially Adobe, the main reason is security issues and updates, I believe. So now, many production people, and videographers are trying to figure out what they are going to do about Pro-Res on the windows platform.

X2 on VLC. It's free. It works. The interface may be a bit clumsy, but it does play 4K. I don't think WMP supports 4K in anything over Windows 8 if it ever did (and it wasn't part of Windows 8 - they took the media player out. Fooking brilliant... :Drogar-Thinking(DBG ). I don't think QT is supported in MS applications anymore? I try to avoid it anyway.

I forget when the window for upgrading to Win10 closes, but it's very soon. And that said, past the little bit of a learning curve, Win10 is much better. I upgraded both my desktop (Win7) and laptop (Win8.1) and don't regret it.

Also, while QT isn't supported anymore, that doesn't mean it won't work. All it means is they are not longer updating it. I have QT installed on both my devices, and have never used it. It's there simply for QT/ProRes support in my other video programs.

Mike, But as Apple moves on with updates to Pro-res, and QT, They won't be available, Yes it works, But what it is, is what it will stay. No big deal to me, When Microsoft quits supporting Win 7 pro, or there is some major speed gain with Win 10 and hardware, 7 Pro works awesome for me. Glad to hear that 10 is working well for you.

I can play the 4K files on the system with the Adobe Media Player, I might download VLC. But.....I really want the O/S to deal with it so I can see thumbnails in Windows Explorer etc.

I'm an Adobe editor. I have a CC subscription, but still cut almost exclusively with CS6 (let's not discuss why here). So I've been hesitant to migrate the system to Windows 10 since CS6 isn't supported on it.

There are apps you can download that show thumbnails regardless of the file format. WMP isn't a great way to go here.

IF the O/S understands the format (codec installed) then Windows Explorer will show thumbnails and WMP will play the files. No app exists that can "show thumbnails regardless of file format".

As Larry mentioned, you should be fine. If you install a new program like VLC. Typically the first time you open a file in a new program that was previously unassociated with a program or right click and select "Open With", from that point on you should see thumbnails being that the file now has a valid program for it to open up in.

I apologise if I sound impatient here, but this is the second time I've been called out on something like this today and I generally don't speak unless I'm sure of myself.

This is an app called media preview. I don't know how far it goes, but so far it's worked for me, thumbnailing all my videos that Windows won't automatically thumbnail.

Went to your link, as it was downloading the software, Windows Defender gave me a warning that the software had a virus.
