Players For GH1 Audio/Video?

Let's start a list of MTS capable players.

Well I still don't have my lens adaptors yet but I was able to just hold up a Sigma 18~35mm 3.5 AF Canon mount lens I got off the internet for $20 in front of the GH1 and takes some videos around the studio. YAY! it works! It was 1080i with whatever the factory default settings are - shooting "W/O Lens" turned on. It was to an ancient 256 MB SD card probably class 0. :D The footage looks great IMO (considering the way it was created. :D The interlacing is very noticeable.) once I found something to play it with.

I'm on a Mac Pro 2006 which I upgraded to 8 cores, 12 GB but still using the stoch7300 GT - and nothing wanted to play the MTS files correctly. Not VLC, Not QT, nor several other player apps I use regularly. :( Then I tried PLex. YAY Success!

Extremely smooth playback, nice sound through my various audio gear.

I was pretty happy. So, what platform are you on and what players have you found that work well? Maybe someone can add this list to one of the FAQs after it's gets going?

GOM player plays it perfectly with a convenient frame advance by using the 'F' key. think Nero has a frame advance with either F or T key

Any idea why on my Windows 7 Media Player, 100% view is not really 100%, the window is smaller?

Splash for Windows (Mac port coming at some point). Good option esp. if you don't have Windows 7.

MTS playback is definitely better than VLC's. It's slick, simple to use and the essentials are there. My only grief with it is that (at least in the Lite) there's no option to fix window to "actual size" in video playback yet. It can't do everything, but it can play MTS back nicely.

I second splash. It uses hardware acceleration on Nvidia cards that are CUDA enabled (most 8000 and newer I believe) and plays MTS like a charm.

I just started using splashlite today. plays alot better than VLC player on my lappy, very happy with it. also looks nice too =)

Great thread idea.

For initial sorting & preview of all photos & videos, including AVCHD/MTS, I mostly use Picasa.

Picasa lets me mix and organize video & photos together, view everything by thumbnails, and do basic cropping of videos for slideshows. And it's free software from Google.

On Windows XP you have to install Haali Media Splitter and ffdshow tryouts first. Both are free, and both appear to be safe. And actually they enable ANY DirectShow player on Windows--Windows Media Player, Media Player Classic, etc.--to play AVCHD.

FYI most of our machines are 4-year old Windows XP ultraportable laptops: Pentium M 2Ghz, 1 or 2 GB RAM, no video card. The cpu is pegged at 100% during playback, and it sometimes drops frames, but it never stops or goes "impressionistic" like when I try to play AVCHD files in VLC. Only problem is that audio is often out of sync.

For editing and "real" playback, I "Log & Transfer" the files in Final Cut Express, transcoding to Apple Intermediate Codec.
