Playback Sound?

So I find that, if I switch to VTR mode while shooting, and use the joystick to find the take I want to look at, if I play the tape after having shuttled, I get no sound playback on speakers or through headphone, and no VU bars in the viewfinder, either.

But, if I stop the tape, then play it, THEN I get sound and VU bars, just like I'd expect.

Is this a "feature" of the DVX100A, or is something the matter with my camera...?
 
Nothings wrong. You have to stop it, then start it to get sound. A little trick that I have picked up is to put it into VTR mode, adjust the monitor volume up one notch, then back down and then press play. Your sound will be there. It's a bit faster than starting; then stopping; then starting again. :thumbsup:

Hey Andrew,
Why do you adjust the monitor volume up and back down? Isn't it just that when you hit play while rewinding, that the tape begins to play(or fast forward) at 1x? Just hitting the play button again should get the tape to play normally, no? Isn't this some sort of function that helps prevent snapping the tape? What am I missing?

Andrew - they shot "Gods and Generals" in your neck of the woods, there...I was in Hagerstown a couple times when I was in high school.

It's just a bit faster than pressing play, then stop, then play again to get sound.
It has nothing to do with tape damage.

It was nice to have a movie shot right here locally. They used an old Lowe's building at our Valley Shopping Mall to shoot indoor scenes. In fact our Product Manager, Dave Kunkel is who shot the "Making-Of" for the DVD.
