Playback problem

I finally got my DVX 100a after much debate and reading on this forum. I have been doing some test shots in our studio and have noticed on both occasions that at a given point that my playback "skips". The picture goes to horizontal bars some of which are frozen on a frame and the others are moving video (this happens after the picture goes blue). This has happened on two seperate tapes...I'm using the Panny MQ tapes. Any ideas?? Any help will be appreciated...I have a two day shoot starting tomorrow with this camera!!...yikes.

Re: Playback problem

I have seen that probelm once before (not sure about the going to blue thing). My camera has done it on a PQ tape. Did you record bars at the beginning of your tape for 1 minute? It is not suggested recording any video at the beginning and very end of the tape. Was the tape new? Or were you recording over a section?

Sorry I can't be of any more help.

Re: Playback problem

Bars were recorded for 30 seconds into both tapes....both tapes are new (we never re-use a tapes). Another interesting (read that scary) thing is that at times the video will play fine but then the sound cuts in and out. Considering the shoots I have this week...this is not not not good.

Re: Playback problem

Do you have a head cleaner tape? I'm sure you've already tried it, but just a thought.

Re: Playback problem

Yea thanks P.K. I just ran it and it does seem better, but the camera is brand new...I must say now I'm a bit nervous as I have a lot of shots over the next two days and feel I can't "trust" this camera. I don't want to have to play back after every take...so I'm considering shooting on Beta now :-[

Re: Playback problem

..im still waiting for an answer as to whetheror not the cams which are selected for testing in the factory have wet tape run through them or not. it would certainly help explain why whan someone uses a new cam with a new dry tape the heads clog right away.

Re: Playback problem

givemefood....has your problem been resolved? I ran the cleaning tape two times at 10 seconds at a time. The camera seems ok, but I don't want to do too many tests because I have a big project that starts tomorrow and I don't want to risk clogging the heads with my tests (all on brand new tape btw). Now I'm just paraniod that I will shoot a take that the client loves and later find that the footage is not useable...this is not an option so again I will probably go with the tried and true Beta.
The thing that sucks about going Beta...I really pushed for this camera and I take it out of the box and there is a head clog....unbelievable.

I feel your pain! I responded to givemefoods thread (see above). I have had my camera for just a couple of weeks, and have less than 5 hours on it. I have incurred the same problem. I believe this is a bigger issue than is being published. I switched from the Sony side because of the incredible features of this camera. Bottom line is I have to have confidence during a shoot that the camera is going to function properly... Especially one that costs $3,400 with less than 5 hours on it!! I have searched, and found numerous messages referring to this same issue. My God, I've shot on Sony camera's for hundreds of hours without a hiccup. Certainly not fresh out of the box. I still believe this is one awsome camera. I look forward to maximizing it's potential, but please.... No one is going to spend a sizeable chunk of money on a camera like this just to shoot his kids birthday. We bought it to sell our services. We have a responsibility to our clients to provide them with what they want. Panasonic has the responsibility to provide me as their customer, with a product (that I paid damn good money for ) that is at the very least -reliable and trustworthy.

Re: Playback problem

Any chance you can record straight to harddisk? Do you have a laptop? Is it an option? For shoots within my apartment I go straight to disk. It works great!

This would be a temporary solution. And, after your shoot, you can resolve the clogged head problem.

Hope your shoot goes well. Good luck!

Re: Playback problem

I had the same problem. I believe it must be due to sticky heads out of the factory and/or from storage. Run a full normal tape through the cam and you should be fine to loosen 'er up a bit.

Re: Playback problem

Its been suggested that new tape should be repacked before shooting. Given the miniaturization of the format, to me this makes good sense.
A new cam with a dirty head seems less likely than new (unrepacked) tape sticking to itself. It happened with two tapes. If they were from the same package I think this increases the chance of this being the problem.

Re: Playback problem

Day one went well...the client and director are thrilled with the results....I just lit shot one for day two....hopefully today goes as well. I ran the panny cleaning tape and that seemed to do the trick...I'm still playing back every scene before we move on.
I considered packing the tapes (as we do with Beta) but I was worried about wear and tear on the camera (we are ordering a deck). Thanks everyone!
