Playback of Different Brand Mini-DV Tape

I know you're not supposed to record with different brands of tape. Someone gave me a sony mini-dv tape and I need to get the footage on to my computer... Is it safe to play this tape through my DVX?

Thanks

Re: Playback of Different Brand Mini-DV Tape

I've been let down in the past by using different brands of tape (sony being the showstopper for me) I was plagued by digital noise - those frames with white little blocks scattered across the screen. Luckily I learned this lesson before I got my DVX. Since swearing off all other tapes and only going with the Panasonic AY-DVM63MQ's the digital noise is a thing of the past. I'd say don't do it.

No it is not safe to do. Sure, it's defnitely possible to do, but it's not safe as it could screw up the cam. It up to you whether you want to take that chance with your DVX or not I suppose. :-/

Hi Brian, you may want to try borrowing a friend's consumer cam, or goto your local electronics store, see if they have any floor model DV cameras for sale. Or get a very low priced new consumer DV camera. It can act as your deck, and get your near $4000 investment out of the loop. ;)

Re: Playback of Different Brand Mini-DV Tape

I have panasonic AY-DVM63PQ(Professional) tapes and AY-DVM63MQ (Master) tapes. Are either okay or should I just stick with master. I have another cam (Canon ZR) so I can use the professional on the other one on simple shots but I was wondering if there is much difference in PRO vs MASTER? Thanks.

Re: Playback of Different Brand Mini-DV Tape

I use the PRO tapes as well but I hear a lot of talk on here that the MASTER tapes are better because one is WET and the other is a DRY tape. I can't remember which though. I get very positive results with the PRO tapes but I am going to check out some MASTERS and see if I like them any better. Just remember to clean your heads on your camera when switching between different brands of tapes even if it is with the same company.

Re: Playback of Different Brand Mini-DV Tape

I could swear that there have been some pretty authoritative posts stating that the PRO tapes are dry as well!
