playback issues

Hey gang. I'm having some trouble with my playback in 5.5... I cant play clips that have been sped up by a large factor (timelapses I shot with the DVX b just rolling for an hour), and some other effects have this problem but its only sometimes with these... What happens is I'll hit play (or render) and the play arrow will change to a stop button, but no playback occurs and the program and source monitors freeze on whatever frames were displayed when I hit play (the buttons are still clickable but dont respond). I can still scroll the playback head thru the timeline but it doesnt do anything.
This started happening about 6 months ago with CS4 but since I wasnt really editing much it didnt bother me. Now I'm on CS5.5 and find myself needing to use PPro a lot. Any ideas?

windows 7 ultimate 64
AMD Phenom 2 x4 3.2ghz
8gb ram
Ge-Force 9800GTX+ 512gb gpu
system drive is 300gb 7200rpm
media drive is 2tb 5400rpm

any thoughts?

SD 24pA .avi from DVX100b, 4:1:1 color space. Timeline is DV 24p standard with the higher of the two audio rates.

Just as any other clip from the dvx, via firewire. I then drop the clip into the timeline and use the time stretch tool to shorten it.

Thanks.

So this is not genuine time lapse here, just a normal DV file? Does it play before you alter the speed?

some possibilities:

-your hard drive is too slow
-if you get the red render bar you should try hitting enter to render the preview
-you need to re-install codecs
-You need to make sure the computer is free of any aliments

clrl+alt+delete and click performance. see if anything maxes out when you try to playback the footage.
also in there go to resource monitor and expand the hard drive monitor and see if that maxes out when you try to playback.

if anything looks to be maxing out you may have found the bottleneck

I had exactly the same problem, incidentally also speeding up DVX footage a few months ago. i think the problem is that premiere has issues speeding up footage at messy rates, like for example 1276.8% or basically any number with a decimal point in it. if you go up in clean increments of 5 or 10% the issue seems to go away, but you should still always render the clip before playing it back, speeding up an hour of footage will put a load of strain on the pc and realtime playback aint happening unless you have the latest and greatest processor and a silly amount of ram.

Jim, yes its just a normal dv file sped up.Josh, good thinking il try that.Imdjay, my first though was the hardrive, but it also did this with my old 500gb 7200rpm drive... I will definetly try your suggestions though thank you! And yes, I have rendered it. Still having issues.
