Playback issue!

I just bought my DVX-100a last week (used, with 18 hrs use)...
After shooting about 15 minutes or so, I was anxious to see what I shot, so I switch it to VCR mode, and went to play it back with some RCA cables on my TV.
When hitting rewind, the TC numbers weren't smoothly moving backwards, and when I would push play, the blue screen remained. After pressing stop and then play again I would get a distorted/pixelized picture. But after a few stops/plays, I would finally get the picture to come up.
This has me worried that I bought a lemon, especially since I cannot capture stuff in Final Cut.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Try using a Panasonic brand cleaning tape. Play it for 10 seconds and see if that fixes your problem. It sounds like you just have a PB head clog.

It very well could be a clogged PB head....have you tried putting the tape into another camcorder for playback or capture into FCP?

No I have not. It's happened on two different tapes, so I suspect it is the heads. It is not a consistent issue (ie, works flawlessly half of the time). I will follow Spec-Comm's advice and hopefully that'll do.
