SHORT: Play Again - Short Drama shot on 7D/5D MkII

Hi guys,

Recently finished my drama short, it's not perfect, and a bit unfinished in places, but it took so much out of me I've had to just accept it where it is and move on to new projects.

We had 12 weeks to make the project, from pre to post production. Shoot in one day, and the winter to contend with. I learnt a lot of things, and worked with some great people, all things I'll take with me on to my next projects.

The film was shot using a combination of 5D MKII and a 7D. We used numerous lenses, including a 50mm 1.4, 20mm 2.8, 35mm f2, 85 1.4, and 17-40 L-Series. This was a great experience, because up until this point I'd been mostly using the 50mm exclusively (ridiculous now I know). This variety is what really gave the film a cinematic quality in parts of the shot selection in my opinion.

The after effects were all done by me using Apple Motion and After Effects, again they're not perfect but I learnt a lot from doing them. The sound design is in a similar position, it's not to the standard I'd like it to be, but I got a lot of experience out of doing it.

I'd really appreciate it if you could have a look guys and just let me know what you think.

P.S. The grading is unfortunate, we had to shoot everything in one day and the variety in light late in November, plus my lack of understanding just how difficult controlling a moving vehicle and the traffic would be meant we lost light - fast.

Things NOT to do when you make a first movie:

- dialogues in vehicules (just even NOT using vehicules)

- doing things with mirrors

- having a lot of actors

- having a lot of locations

- doing difficult stuff, just to show "hé look, what we did... it's not perfect and actualy it's stupid...but hé, we did it"... (doesn't work)

The idea of the story is good actualy, so maybe with some more experience.....

I like the concept, you could probably do a lot more with it if you wanted to expand it.

Not sure that that's the best image you can get out of those lenses and camera. A couple of the wide shots look good but I've seen better quality out the 7D/5D before. Keep working with it.

Well done man, this was interesting!

Easy to watch all the way through. I'm a big Edgar Wright fan, so I thought with the wide bus shot, you were gonna do some sweet transitions with the cars passing!

You let me down hahaha. He shoulda got the girl ;) She played a nice part.

Thanks for the feedback guys, it's invaluable. I'm working on a short doc right now, just got the trailer online - think it's looking ok. Thanks again for having a look!
